A highly energetic, high-oxygen carrier suitable as high-performing green replacement for ammonium perchlorate includes halogen-free ionic salts consisting of fuel cations and over-oxidized anions containing multiple nitro- or nitromethyl-substituted azolyl ligands. The over-oxidized anions include a central atom selected from the group consisting of boron, aluminum, or gallium. Characteristically, the carrier has sufficient amounts of oxygen for complete or near complete combustion of the over-oxidized anions, the fuel cations, metal additives and binders.

High-performing stable green replacements for ammonium perchlorate

Provided are energetic materials of low vapor pressure in the form of ionic liquids having fuel and oxidizer ions including, substituted pyridinium or imidazolium cations paired with nitrato-, perchlorato-, or nitramido-based anions, to form such ionic liquids or salts. The salts of the present invention are low melting and have essentially little or no vapor pressure over a wide temperature range. The salts of this invention are thus an important breakthrough since they can serve as high-performing monopropellants which are not complex mixtures and have no vapor toxicity. Such salts also find use as munitions, liquid explosives, reaction media for the synthesis of other high-energy materials, and as plasticizers.

Energetic ionic liquids

This method generates the first electronically excited state of oxygen (singlet delta) at ambient temperature by a gas-solid chemical reaction involving a solid alkali metal peroxide or a solid alkaline earth peroxide and a non-radioactive-hydrogen-isotope halide gas. Singlet delta oxygen was produced from solid lithium peroxide, sodium peroxide or barium peroxide by reaction with gaseous hydrogen chloride, hydrogen bromide, deuterium chloride, or deuterium bromide. The method can be practiced in a static or a flow system, and the reaction may take place in a chemical oxygen-iodine laser. The described process avoids unstable precursors, such as basic hydrogen peroxide, and liquid phase quenching. The method is safe, compact, solvent-free, mechanically simple, requires no external energy source, and permits the generation of large quantities of singlet delta oxygen. Furthermore, since no liquid phase separations are required the process is ideally suited for zero gravitational force conditions.

A homoleptic polynitrogen ion and salts thereof are described as being highly exothermic in nature and thus give rise to compounds useful for propulsion and explosive applications, among others. Also described are processes for the macroscopic production of compounds containing homoleptic polynitrogen.

Pentanitrogen(1&plus;)cation and salt containing the same

Tetramethylammonium azide, N(CH.sub.3).sub.4 N.sub.3, is prepared by a new process per the present invention. In the prior art, preparation of such azide was by use of shock-sensitive starting materials, i.e. AgN.sub.3 and HN.sub.3. The method of the present invention provides a new method for making such azide at high purity, at room temperature, without the use of shock-sensitive materials.
