A pipe-type housing for a shock absorber has a bearing eye at one end for a fastening member. The housing is formed of a welded or continuous seamless steel pipe formed at one end by hot or cold extrusion to provide a flattened portion with two spaced generally parallel surfaces. Each of the surfaces has an opening aligned with the opening in the other. A flange extends around each opening and projects inwardly relative to the flattened section toward the other flange, however, the flanges are spaced apart. In the deformation of the pipe a transition wall is formed between the flattened part and the remaining part with the normal pipe cross-section. A base is inserted into the normal pipe cross-section abutting the transition wall. The base is sealed with the inner circumferential surface of the pipe by a seal ring fitted into a circumferentially extending groove in the base. With the base inserted into the pipe, a groove is rolled in the pipe and is pressed into the groove in the base into contact with the seal ring.

In the formation of a crankshaft, such as used in small gasoline motors for lawn motors, chain saws and the like, separately produced crank webs, shaft pins and crank pins are used to form an integral crankshaft. Initially the various parts are shaped to the desired dimensions. The crank web can be stamped from a metal strip or it can be a forged sintered part. A shaft pin is inserted in sliding contact with an opening in a crank web and then the two parts are secured together by pressure welding. Another crank web and shaft pin are assembled in a similar manner. The two webs are then interconnected by a crankpin positioned in another opening in each of the webs and a connecting rod is installed on the crankpin.

In a steering column for a motor vehicle steering mechanism, a tubular first member and a second member are arranged in coaxial and partly coextensive relation. The second member fits into the first member. At least the first member is deformed transversely of the axial direction into gripping surface contact with the second member so that the two members rotate as a unit about their co-axes when the steering column is turned without any axial movement between them up to a given level of applied axial force. Above the given level the members can telescope one into the other in the event of a collision.

A method for making a centrosymmetrical spider of a universal joint by extrusion molding involves pressing both end faces of a cylindrical blank the same distance towards the center of the blank to force the blank material radially outwards from the center of the cylindrical blank in a stream which is symmetrical relative to the two end faces and into a cavity of a split mold. Also disclosed is a molding apparatus for practicing the method. The apparatus includes a floating mold. One end of the apparatus can be rigidly fixed to a press for operating the punches which provide the extrusion pressure.
