Thin glasses having high refractive index (n), a layer composite assembly made from these thin glasses, a method for the production of the thin glasses, and the uses of the thin glasses are provided. The thin glasses are processed in an in line manufacturing process and have the optical properties of a classical optical glass. The thin glasses are highly transparent, crystallization-resistant, chemically resistant and highly refractive. The viscosity/temperature behavior of the thin glasses is adjusted to the manufacturing process via in line flat glass methods.

A highly refractive and highly transparent optical glass is provided. The use of such a glass, optical elements and processes for producing the glass or the optical elements are also provided.

Optical glass

The lead-free and arsenic-free optical glasses have a refractive index of 1.83&#x2266;n&#x2266;1.95 and an Abb&#xe9; number of 24&#x2266;&#x3bd;&#x2266;35, good chemical resistance, excellent crystallization stability and a composition, in wt. % based on oxide content, of SiO, 2-8; BO, 15-22; LaO, 35-42; ZnO, 10-18; TiO, 9-15; ZrO, 3-10; NbO, 4-10; and WO, &#x3e;0.5-3. Besides containing at most 5 wt. % of each of GeO, AgO and BaO and conventional fining agents, they may also contain at most in total 5 wt. % of AlO, MgO, CaO, SrO, POand up to at most in total 5 wt. % of the components F, TaO. The glasses are preferably free of alkali metal oxides, BiO, YO, GdOand/or YbO. Optical elements made from the optical glass are also described.

A method and an apparatus for the rapid melting of glasses in a skull crucible is provided. The method and apparatus introduce high-frequency energy into the contents of the crucible by means of a coil arrangement surrounding the skull crucible, in order to heat the melt, and the batch is laid and the molten glass discharged in the upper region of the crucible, and undissolved constituents of the batch are retained by means of a cooled bridge which is immersed in the melt. The glass is taken off above the coil arrangement and is fed for further processing without flowing through the coil region.

The present invention relates to lead and arsenic free optical glasses, used for the application areas imaging, digital projection, photolithography, laser technology, wafer/chip technology as well as telecommunication, optical communications engineering, optics, illumination and in the automotive sector. An improved optical glass having an index of refraction of .gtoreq.1.69, an Abbe number of .gtoreq.38, and a density of .ltoreq.3.25 g/cm.sup.3, represents a further development of another optical glass recently provided by the same inventors. The new glass has improved suitability for continuous-tank manufacture and increased acidproofness and differs from the other glass in its content of 0.5-4.0% by weight of P.sub.2 O.sub.5 ; its sum total of SiO.sub.2 +B.sub.2 O.sub.3 +Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 +P.sub.2 O.sub.5 being 38.5-41.5% by weight; and its sum total of MgO+CaO being 13-17.5% by weight.
