A filter system for filtering water and/or wastewater including a sludge blanket clarifier for removing at least some impurities from influent. The sludge blanket clarifier includes a clarifier compartment in which a sludge blanket is to be formed to remove at least some impurities from influent directed into the clarifier compartment and through the sludge blanket. The clarifier compartment has at least one vertical sidewall extending from a bottom of the clarifier compartment to a top of the clarifier compartment. The clarifier compartment has a cross-sectional area that varies over at least a portion of a height of the clarifier compartment such that the velocity of influent just prior to entry into the sludge blanket is less than the velocity of influent just after entering the clarifier compartment.

System for filtering water or wastewater

A method for minimizing localized corrosion of fluid containers that occurs as a consequence of most non-chemical procedures for removing scale deposits is described. It counteracts the unavoidable side-effect of the lowering of the local pH in the vicinity of the bubbles of CO.sub.2 that are generated during an electromagnetically-induced controlled precipitation procedure. The method is a simple and facile procedure for curbing the localized corrosion occurring as a result of most non-chemical procedures for removing scales. The method is desirably performed by an induction coil wrapped around a fluid container such as a pipe encrusted with scale through which hard water is flowing. A pulsing electrical current is successively applied through the coil and halted, preferably for 3 to 10 minutes each. When the current is applied, a transitory induced magnetic field is generated in the solution, and scale encrusted on the fluid container dissolves in the solution. When the pulsing current is stopped, the induced magnetic field in the solution ceases and so the scale stops dissolving, allowing a protective layer of scale to form over potential points of corrosion. Optionally permanent magnets may be used in the process, alone or with an induction coil.

Reduced corrosion electronic descaling technology

A probe rod is inserted into a water main through a corporation cock. The rod has a plurality of transverse passages parallel to one another and aligned in the direction of flow. Within these transverse passages, in flush relationship to the passage walls, are inserted removable sampling rings. All but one of the rings are of the same material as the inner wall of the main. The remaining ring, used as a control, is a synthetic resin ring. The flush relationship prevents the formation of turbulent eddies at the ends of the rings. Consequently, microbial growth conditions on the rings themselves reliably simulate conditions on the interior wall of the main. Within a tubular extension on the exterior of the corporation cock an O-ring seal is provided. The length of the extension, and the position of the seal, are such that the probe rod can be partially withdrawn beyond the corporation valve without causing any of the transverse passages to pass through the O-ring. Thus, the rod can be partially withdrawn, and the corporation valve closed before the rod is fully withdrawn. Because of the length of the extension and the position of the O-ring, partial withdrawal of the probe rod can be accomplished without scouring of the sampling rings due to high velocity flow of water through the transverse passages as they move through the O-ring.

A domestic well water system, rendered unusable by volatile contaminants in the groundwater, can be restored to use by installing an aerator in a flow path such that water is continuously pumped, by the existing well pump, out of the well, through the aerator, and back to the well through the well head. Water is diverted from this flow path for use. The well serves as a storage device, and water returned from the aerator to the well mixes with water in the well and serves as a buffer to encroachment by contaminated groundwater.
