The invention discloses dispersions of preferably modified strontium carbonate in organic liquids, for example in alcohols, ketones or particularly methylene chloride. The dispersions are usable for the preparation of polymers which have reduced birefringence or no birefringence and are therefore suitable for optical applications. The powder obtainable after the removal of the organic liquid can surprisingly be converted back to a dispersion with little energy.

Epoxy resins comprising deagglomerated barium sulphate with an average particle size of less than 0.5 &#x3bc;M feature increased flexural impact strength and breaking extension. Particles of strontium carbonate, barium carbonate, strontium sulfate and/or barium sulfate having a sufficient degree of fineness, especially when produced synthetically, are suitable as abrasive agents in chemical mechanical polishing (CMP polishing) of components, e.g., microelectronic components such as silicon wafers. The alkaline earth metal salt compounds are used as slurries in water and/or organic liquids and optionally may contain a dispersing agent, and preferably have a pH value of at least 8.

The invention concerns a micronized alkaline earth metal carbonate prepared with or without the use of an agent preventing crystal growth, and a process for its preparation and use. The prepared micronized calcium carbonate, barium carbonate with a BET surface area ranging from 3 to 30 m /g or strontium carbonate with a BET surface area ranging from 3 to 50 m /g is suitable in particular for preparing capacitors, thermistors and other oxide ceramic electrical components containing calcium oxide, barium oxide or strontium oxide, and high-temperature superconductors. Ammonium salts or alkylammonium salts of carboxylic acids having a total of between 3 and 12 carbon atoms and at least two COOH groups or at least two OH groups, e.g. salts of maleic acid or nitric acid, are used as agents preventing crystal growth.
