In an internal combustion engine with two or more cylinders and two inlet valves per cylinder, in which the intake passages of two adjacent cylinders, which lead towards the inlet valves, are located side by side, symmetrically relative to the symmetry plane of the two cylinders, and in which the cylinder head is made in one piece and has one common inlet flange with an inlet channel, which is flow-connected, past a lug receiving one of the cylinder head studs, with the intake passages formed by guiding surfaces and leading towards the individual inlet valves, the intake passages leading to the inlet valves positioned at a lesser distance in the direction of flow are guided on one side of the lug and the intake passages leading to the inlet valves positioned at a greater distance are guided on the other side of the lug, and the inlet valves of the adjacent cylinders are controlled in such a way that the cylinders are fed with combustion air at different points in time.

Internal combustion engine with two inlet valves per cylinder

A water-cooled internal combustion engine powering the vehicle is mounted in an engine compartment comprising a sound-insulating capsule. Independent of and additionally to any possible blower ventilation of the capsule at least one separate inlet opening into the capsule is connected to an intake opening situated in an area which is exposed to dynamic pressure when the vehicle is in motion. The front cross-member may be provided with an intake opening open in the direction of motion as well as with a sound-absorbing lining, and the inflowing cooling air may be fed into the capsule via the adjacent longitudinal beams of the vehicle frame.

Air cooling arrangement for encapsulated vehicle engine

In a motor vehicle a water-cooled internal combustion engine serving as the driving engine is enclosed by a sound-absorbing capsule partly formed by the surrounding parts of the vehicle. At the front wall of this capsule a housing is provided to receive the air flowing off from the radiator, from which housing a closed air duct passes through the capsule, leading into the outside at one of the other capsule walls.

Motor vehicle with a sound-absorbing capsule for the driving engine

An internal combustion engine powering a motor vehicle is provided with a separate exhaust casing which is located within an engine compartment developed into a sound-insulating capsule, and is designed as a roof-type cover without a bottom shielding at least those parts of the exhaust system close to the cylinder head of the engine. This cover is connected with an outlet opening in an outer wall of the vehicle, which opening is positioned in an area where the heated air rises from the exhaust system, such that ventilation of the capsule and the exhaust system is ensured even after the engine has been turned off.

In order to improve in a simple manner the ventilation of a water-cooled internal combustion engine having a sound-absorbing cover, a suction device is provided at the air inlet opening of the cover, the suction device containing a suction port in the low pressure area of the radiator/fan assembly. By specific placement of several air inlet openings a variety of cooling requirements may be met.

In order to avoid the danger of overheating the separate exhaust jacket of a water-cooled internal combustion engine with a sound-absorbing cover whose enclosed space contains air inlet and outlet openings sealed against the penetration of sound, and is ventilated by cooling air during operation of the engine, and which has a separate exhaust jacket with air ducts of its own-with a radiator cooling fan being placed outside of the cover in the vicinity of a cover wall serving as a radial deflector for the outgoing air from the fan, and with the exhaust jacket leading substantially upwards from its outlet to its inlet opening-after the engine has been switched off and the forced ventilation has thus come to a standstill, the air inlet opening leading into the exhaust jacket is connected to the topmost part of this jacket and is positioned such as to be exposed to the flow of outgoing air from the fan.

Water-cooled internal combustion engine with a sound absorbing cover

An internal combustion engine with a noise-suppressing encapsulation has a drive wheel for auxiliary units which is driven by the crankshaft of the engine and arranged outside the encapsulation. The drive wheel consists of two concentric parts which are connected via at least one elastic member. The inner part of the drive wheel has cooling air ducts which extend from inlet ends on the side opposite an opening in the encapsulation wall to a exit ends on the side adjacent the opening, the exit ends being spaced a greater distance from the axis of rotation than the inlet ends, although still lying within the noted opening. Thus a blower is provided in the form of a centrifugal pump. A cover is connected to the outer part of the drive wheel which covers the inner part and has sound-isolated suction openings for the cooling air.

In an internal combustion engine the power generating parts mainly responsible for body resonance and sound vibration such as the crankshaft (3), cylinder block and cylinder head (35) are combined in a power unit which is supported in the crankcase (4) on elastic vibration-absorbing mountings (2) with the sidewalls of the crankcase (4) extending above the crankshaft axis (3). By this arrangement the crankcase (4) is free from direct vibrations leaving other non-power transmitting engine parts mounted above the crankcase (4) which require means to suppress radiated noise. In one embodiment the induction manifold (7) and mounting parts (13, 14) thereof together with the rocker cover (20) are insulated from the cylinder head (35) by vibration-absorbing elements (8,15,16,21,26) and are so shaped and arranged that they provide a screen for noise radiated from the cylinder head (35). Thus, essential parts of the engine have the secondary function of reducing the level of noise emitted by the engine.

Low-noise level internal combustion engine

In an internal combustion engine comprising a crankshaft (7) and crankshaft main bearings (6), an engine unit support (1) which supports the crankshaft main bearings, and a cylinderhead (3) mounted on the engine unit support (1), which are engine parts directly affected by body resonance and sound vibration, at least one vibration absorbing and power transmitting element (15) located between the engine parts directly affected by sound vibration and the crankcase (8), a sealing element (21) located in a joint between a engine unit support (1) and the crankcase (8) which seals an encapsulated upper dry engine region oil-tightly against a lower oil-wetted engine region (22), an elastic filling element (19) bridging at least a part of the joint being inserted into the joint before the mounting of the sealing element (21) and supporting the latter, whereby the sealing element (21) comprises a viscous material forming an adhesive compound with metal which is resilient after curing. Thus, the rubber material of the vibration absorbing elements (15) can be chosen without regard for the oil-resistance and customary vibration absorbing elements can be used without a specific adaption. Furthermore, this arrangement of the sealing element does not require a specific machining of the surfaces lying close to the sealing element.

Internal combustion engine

An internal combustion engine with a sound-reducing encapsulation, wherein at least the hottest parts of the exhaust system of the engine are located outside of the engine encapsulation and within a special exhaust pipe casing. At the upper side of the exhaust pipe casing an air outlet opening is provided through which the air heated by the exhaust system parts can emerge to the surroundings without getting into the encapsulation. The air outlet opening is lined with sound-absorbing material. The free sectional area of the air outlet opening preferably may be variable by flap means and in dependency of an engine operation parameter. The flap means can be operated by a hydraulic cylinder connected to the lubricating system of the engine.

An internal combustion engine having a noise-suppressing encapsulation, a cooling air blower to ventilate the encapsulation, at least one cooling air inlet opening and at least one cooling air outlet opening arranged in the encapsulation, and an exhaust pipe connected to the engine by means of at least one body-resonance-absorbing compensator located at least partially within the encapsulation. The compensator penetrates the encapsulation without touching it and in the region of penetration is arranged at least one plate-like absorption silencer substantially within a plane perpendicular to the compensator axis.
