A process for detoxifying a high aqueous content hazardous waste stream having a water content greater than about 70 weight percent and comprising halogenated hydrocarbonaceous compounds which comprises the steps of: (a) contacting the hazardous waste stream containing halogenated hydrocarbonaceous compounds in the presence of hydrogen and in the absence of a basic compound with a hydrogenation catalyst comprising a refractory support and at least one metal having hydrogenation activity and which metal is selected from the metals of Groups VI-B and VIII of the Periodic Table in a hydrotreating reaction zone operated at conditions selected to hydrogenate at least a portion of the halogenated hydrocarbonaceous compounds which conditions include a pressure from about 100 psig (2068 kPa gauge) to about 5000 psig (34475 kPa gauge), a maximum catalyst temperature from about 250.degree. F. (121.degree. C.) to about 850.degree. F. (454.degree. C.) and a hydrogen circulation rate from about 200 SCFB (35.6 std. m.sup.3 /m.sup.3) to about 10,000 SCFB (1778 std. m.sup.3 /m.sup.3); and (b) separating the effluent from the hydrotreating reaction zone in a gravitational separation zone to provide a hydrogenated hydrocarbonaceous stream and a detoxified aqueous stream.

Improved double wall tubing assembly which is especially useful in heat exchangers of the 'coil-in-can' type for solar applications has a double wall construction which insures that a leak developing from a failure in either of the walls will not result in a mixing of fluid external to the outer tube with the fluid flowing internally of the inner tube. An outwardly projecting helical fin configuration formed on the outer surface of the inner tube provides an effective heat transfer medium between the inner and outer walls of the tube assembly while defining a spiral flow channel through which leakage entering through either wall can flow and be detected. A method of making the double wall tube assembly is disclosed wherein a finned outer tube is assembled over a previously finned inner tube. The assembled tubes are then brought into firm mechanical contact by the step of forming the assembled tubes into a coil and/or by expanding the inner tube. An additional method is also disclosed wherein a plain outer tube is assembled over a previously formed inner tube and then contacted by finning tools which fin its outer surface and bring its inner diameter into intimate contact with the inner tube.

An improved drawing die apparatus is disclosed for reducing the wall thickness of a thin wall metal tube in cooperation with a floating pin or a fixed mandrel. At least three, and preferably four, wall thickness sensors are positioned in the die body in angular relationship around the outer periphery of a carbide draw die nib for indicating the wall thickness, and thus the eccentricity, of the tubing as it is being produced. Preferably, the sensors are contact type ultrasonic transducers which are acoustically coupled with a viscous couplant to flats formed on the draw nib in regions overlying a land region of the die. The acoustic coupling between the draw nib and tube is achieved through the O.D. drawing lubricant.

Conductive metal pigments which may be used in electrical devices are prepared by forming an alloy of a non-noble conductive metal and at least one oxidizable material, mixing the resulting alloy with a vitreous frit and an organic vehicle to form an ink, screening said ink onto a substrate, firing the alloy in an air atmosphere at a temperature in excess of about 500.degree. C. and cooling the ink to produce a conductive pigment. The oxidizable material is preferentially oxidized during the firing with a concomitant non-oxidation of the non-noble conductive metal.

Oxygen sensor incorporating a thin film electrolyte such as yttria stabilized zirconia sputtered onto a substrate produces an electrical signal in response to differences in oxygen partial pressures. The electrical signal changes rapidly enough for useful operation at temperatures which are substantially lower than those required by conventional oxygen sensors having a rigid, self-supporting thimble, tubular, or disc type electrolyte. For example, rapidly responding signals have been generated at temperatures below 200.degree. C whereas state of the art devices such as those used for sensing exhaust gases in automotive vehicles require temperatures higher than about 400.degree. C.

A plastic laminate form of heating panel incorporating a layer of a semiconductive carbonaceous pyropolymer, consisting of carbon and hydrogen on a high surface area refractory inorganic oxide support, with the conductive pyropolymer positioned to at least one side of at least one laminate layer and a reflective metallic layer on the other side thereof such that radiant heat is controlled and directed outwardly in a desired manner to minimize energy being wasted by a 'rearward' flow.

The material is formed by reacting an organic pyrolyzable substance in the presence of a refractory oxide having a surface area of from about 1 to about 500 square meters per gram in a non-oxidizing atmosphere at a temperature of at least 400.degree. Electrical resistor inks comprising a mixture of at least one semi-conducting pyropolymeric inorganic refractory oxide material and a vehicle consisting of a binder such as a synthetic resin or a varnish, and a suitable solvent or oil, etc., are useful in forming resistors in electrical circuits, especially on printed circuit boards and on the ceramic substrates used for thick film circuits. In addition, the ink may contain other components such as metal powders, anti-skinning agents, drying agents, colored pigments, waxes, etc.

Improved forms of electric resistance elements or resistors may be made from semiconducting organic-refractory oxide fibers, as for example drawn alumina fibers which have been subjected to contact with a pyrolyzable organic substance at a temperature above about 400.degree. C. A few, or a large number of the semiconductive fibers, can be used in a group or bundle form to provide a desired resistance for a particular resistor. A preferred form of resistance element will cover the fibers in a quartz tube or other suitable encapsulating material to preclude moisture problems.

Electrical resistor inks comprising a mixture of a semi-conducting pyropolymeric inorganic material and a transition metal oxide along with a vehicle consisting of a binder such as a synthetic resin or a varnish and a suitable solvent or oil, etc. are useful in forming resistors in electrical circuits, the resistor ink possessing a temperature coefficient of resistance of less than about 500 ppm/.degree. C.

Electrical resistor inks comprising a mixture of carbon black and a semi-conducting pyropolymeric inorganic material along with a vehicle consisting of a binder such as a synthetic resin or a varnish and a suitable solvent or oil, etc. are useful in forming resistors in electrical circuits, the resistor ink possessing a temperature coefficient of resistance of less than 500 ppm/.degree. C.

Semi-conducting materials which may be used in preparing resistors may be prepared by treating a refractory oxide with a pyrolyzable organic compound at an elevated temperature and thereafter further treating the resultant semi-conducting pyropolymeric inorganic refractory oxide composite material at an elevated temperature with subsequently controlled cooling rate to provide a material which possesses a lower resistivity and a controllable temperature coefficient of resistance over a wide range.
