A coater incorporates a die, a reservoir, a gravure cylinder, and a doctor blade for applying coating fluid to a moving surface. The flow rate of coating fluid to the gravure cylinder is controlled to equal the rate at which coating fluid is consumed by the coating process. This eliminates the need to recycle surplus coating fluid. The coating fluid can be quickly and conveniently replaced with a solvent in the reservoir when coating is not being performed to reduce the occurrence of coating defects arising from excessive evaporation of solvent and premature solidification of coating fluid.

An ultrasonically assisted coating method for applying a smooth layer of coating material on a surface of a moving web are disclosed. A coating material is applied onto one web surface. An ultrasonic energy generator excites the line of initial contact between the coating material and the web at a uniform ultrasonic intensity selected in combination with the properties of the coating material. The coated web has a thin, uniform crossweb thickness with low thickness variations.

Acetone cannot be completely removed from acetone-methanol mixtures by distillation because of the presence of the minimum boiling azeotrope. Acetone can be readily separated from methanol by using extractive distillation in which the extractive agent is dimethylformamide, either alone or admixed with other compounds. Typical examples of effective agents are: dimethylformamide; dimethylformamide and diethylene glycol; dimethyl formamide, glycerine and propylene glycol.

Acetone can be readily separated from methanol by using extractive distillation in which the extractive agent is a higher boiling oxygenated, nitrogenous and/or sulfur-containing organic compound or a mixture of two or more of these. Typical examples of effective agents are: Glycerine, 1,5-Pentanediol, Dimethylsulfoxide, n-Hexanol, Dioctyl phthalate and N,N-Dimethylacetamide.
