Providing a multimedia message service (MMS) in an Internet protocol (IP) multimedia subsystem (IMS) network is described herein. A method can include establishing a first session initiation protocol (SIP) session between a source IMS device and a next generation multimedia message service center (NG MMSC), encapsulating, at the source IMS device, an MMS message in a message session relay protocol (MSRP) message, transmitting the MSRP message from the IMS device to the NG MMSC; and storing the MMS message at the NG MMSC for further delivery to the destination device. Proving the multimedia message service can further include transmitting the MMS message to a destination legacy device via legacy MMS protocols or transmitting the MMS message to a destination IMS device via MSRP. Furthermore, providing the multimedia message service can include receiving a legacy MMS message and delivering the MMS message to a destination IMS device via MSRP.

IMS and MMS Interworking

A method includes receiving a first secured registration request message from user equipment at a registration server in an Internet Protocol multimedia subsystem network, the first secured registration request message being secured using a first security protocol, determining at the registration server that the first secured registration request message cannot be decoded using the first security protocol, sending a message from the registration server to the user equipment proposing a second security protocol, and receiving a second secured registration request message from the user equipment at the registration server, the second secured registration request message being secured using the second security protocol.

Providing for inter-working between SMS network architectures and IMS network architectures in a mobile environment is described herein. By way of example, a next generation (NG) short message service center (SMSC) is provided that can receive SMS messages in mobile application protocol (MAP) and convert such messages to IMS protocol. In addition, the NG SMSC can also receive IMS data and convert the IMS data to an SMS MAP message. The NG SMSC can reference an IMS or an SMS location registry to determine a location of the target device, and convert from IMS to SMS MAP, and vice versa, as suitable. Accordingly, the NG SMSC can provide an efficient interface between legacy SMS and NG IMS network components while preserving legacy protocols associated with such networks.
