The method serves for expanding and formatting profiled metal strip material () to form a netting-like mat structure () of a predeterminable mesh width by a continuous drawing-open process. For this purpose, the strip material () is provided with notches (), which extend in the longitudinal direction of the strip, are of a limited length and between them form metal strands (), wherein, after the expanding and formatting, the unnotched regions form netting nodes () and initially the metal strands () are connected to one another by way of adjoining webs in the base of the notch. The webs have fatigue-fracture induced incipient tears formed by flexural deformation. The remaining web is then severed by a separating roll, so that the metal strands () are reliably separated from one another in the notch region and the strip material () can be drawn open to form the netting-like structure. The strip material () is first drawn open at the beginning of the strip to the intended mesh width in such a way that some rows of mesh are aligned orthogonally and oriented at right angles to the edge of the strip with respect to their mesh diagonal. The prepared beginning of the strip is placed with the meshes onto the spikes () of a spiked roll () of a pair of rolls (), after which the pressure roll () of the pair of rolls () is infed towards the spiked roll () and with it forms a rolling gap. In this case, the arrangement of the spikes () is chosen such that every second mesh&#x2014;in both orthogonal directions&#x2014;is shaped by a spike (), in that the spikes () of the spiked roll () enter the clearances () in the pressure roll ().

Expanding and formatting profiled metal strip

The profiled metal fibre with a substantially rectangular cross-section, also with bent fibre ends in the form of a clip, is used to stabilise, bond, attach or join materials and construction materials such as concrete, wood, paper and the like. The fibre edges of the fibre outer surfaces extending in the longitudinal direction of the fibre are designed as edge surfaces () oriented at an angle to the fibre outer surfaces in the manner of a bevel. The two wider fibre outer surfaces () of the rectangular fibre are provided with V-shaped channels () extending in the longitudinal direction, wherein the edge surfaces () are provided with projections () and the V-shaped channels () are provided with end zones () that bound their longitudinal extent. The projections form anchoring heads and the end zones form anchor surfaces with respect to the material to be stabilised, bonded or attached.

Profiled metal fiber

A method of making steel fibers, preferably for use as a concrete additive, and for the supply thereof in making steel fiber concrete, characterized in that to form the steel fibers () first a sheet-metal strip () is notched either on one face or both faces so as to form steel-fiber wires () that are initially connected together by webs (), and that further, for subsequently converting the webs () into thin easily mutually separable separation webs forming separation surfaces that are fracture-rough and low in burring upon separation, the steel-fiber strip is subjected to a flexing process in which each web () is subjected to multiple bending deformations about its longitudinal axis in such a way that incipient cracks are produced at the webs () due to fatigue fracture and thus the separation webs are produced.

Method for producing steel fibers

The method serves for the production of a wire strip () comprising a plurality of wires () arranged parallel to each other. For this purpose a metal strip is first pre-notched either on one side or both sides for the formation of the wires (), whereby wires () are generated which are still connected to webs (). To transform the webs () subsequently into thin, easy to separate and, when separated, smooth and burr-free separation webs forming separation areas, the wire strip () is subjected to a milling process during which each web () is subjected to a multiple bending strain along the longitudinal axis thereof in such a way that incipient cracks form, due to fatigue fracture, in the area of the webs (), and thereby the separation web is created.

Method of making strip formed by web-connected wires

The method serves for producing network-like metal mats from metallic strip material, for which purpose the strip material is first provided with notches (), running parallel to one another, for the forming of metal wires (), by means of notching rollers. The notches () are thereby formed to such depths, depending on the material, that as far as possible no sliding fractures are formed. The notches () are interrupted by unnotched regions&#x2014;the mutual spacing of which in the respective notch () determines the later possible mesh width&#x2014;at least in such a way that they later form network nodes (). The network nodes () are offset by approximately half a network node spacing in the respectively adjacent notches (). Then, the strip, formed in this manner, is subjected to a flexing process, in which the webs () adjoining the base of the notch and still connecting the metal wires () to one another undergo multiple bending deformation about the longitudinal axis thereof in such a way that incipient cracks occur as a result of fatigue fracture. This leads to the complete separation of the metal wires () in the region of the webs (), while no incipient cracks form at the network nodes (). Finally, the strip material is subjected to transverse tensile forces acting on both its peripheral metal wires (), whereby a widening deformation of the wire strip () into a network-like structure takes place.

Method of and apparatus for making mesh-like metal mats

The metal fiber has fiber outer surfaces () oriented substantially at right angles to each other and can also be provided with bent ends in the shape of a clip. The metal fiber is used to stabilize, strengthen, or fasten materials such as concrete, wood and the like. The fiber edges () formed by the fiber outer surfaces () of the metal fiber and extending in the longitudinal direction of the fiber are designed as edge surfaces () oriented at an angle to the fiber outer surfaces () in the manner of a chamfer. Said edge surfaces () have projections, which form anchoring heads () that are anchored in the materials to be stabilized, strengthened, or fastened.

A band-shaped semi-finished product is made out of a ductile material and is configured to be separated into at least two sections. At least one pair of wedge-shaped, non-cuttingly formed longitudinal notches are formed, between the tips of which there remains a thin web of material, which can be torn easily with little force. The semi-finished product is distinguished by burr-free separated edges, defined geometry of the separating surfaces, and extremely reduced breaking-surface portions. It shows improved resistance during static and dynamic stress, in particular for alternating bending loads, in comparison to conventional, for example via the rolling-cutting technique, separated semi-finished products.
