A cleaning device and method is provided for a glue-spreading element, which spreads glue in a working position onto a material web, in particular a paper web, and which can be moved to a cleaning position inside the cleaning device. At least one scraper element is provided for cleaning the glue-spreading element.

Apparatus for the application of adhesive to one side of a running web of tipping paper for use in filter cigarette makers has a single source of adhesive or two or more sources containing identical or different adhesives, and one or more conduits leading from the source(s) to one or more nozzles which applies or apply one or more films of a single adhesive or of different adhesives to selected portions of the one side of the web. The rate of admission of adhesive(s) to the nozzle(s), including interruption and restarting of admission of adhesive(s), is regulated by one or more valves each having a body receiving a rotary valving element provided with one or more peripheral projections and/or recesses serving to regulate the rate of flow of adhesive toward the single nozzle or the respective nozzles. The rotary elements of two or more valves can constitute disc-shaped sections of a single rotor confined in a valve body common to all valves. The adhesive or at least one of two or more different adhesives being applied to the web can contain one or more taste- and/or odor- and or flammability influencing agents.

Method of and apparatus for applying adhesive to webs of wrapping material

An improved method of and an improved apparatus for detecting and correcting unsatisfactory patterns of adhesive is applied to a running web of paper or the like in a tobacco processing machine by a cyclically operated paster. A linear scanning camera is employed to take pictures of groups of at least some of the patterns which are applied during successive cycles of the paster, and such pictures are displayed and compared with a reference image of satisfactory patterns and preferably also with additional reference images. The results of comparison are relied upon for the making of corrections, for example, by changing the operation of the paster and/or by changing the direction of advancement of the web between the paster and the camera.

Method of and apparatus for applying, monitoring and correcting patterns of adhesive on running webs of paper and the like

A filter-attachment machine in the tobacco-processing industry is provided. The machine has a plurality of conveying devices for products in the tobacco-processing industry, and at least one main drive that drives the plurality of conveying devices. The machine also has a pull-off device for pulling a cover tape ribbon from a cover tape supply, a cover-tape cutting device for cutting the cover tape ribbon into sections of a predetermined length, and at least one secondary drive that drives the pull-off device and the cover-tape cutting device. The cover tape ribbon is conveyed from the pull-off device to the cover-tape cutting device, and the sections of cover tape ribbon are transferred to the products on one of the plurality of conveying devices.

Filter-attachment machine and method of operating a filter-attachment machine

Apparatus for the application of adhesive to one side of a running web of tipping paper for use in filter cigarete makers has a single source of adhesive or two or more sources containing identical or different adhesives, and one or more conduits leading from the source(s) to one or more nozzles which applies or apply one or more films of a single adhesive or of different adhesives to selected portions of the one side of the web. The application of adhesive to selected non-perforated sections of one side of a running web of tipping paper in a filter cigarette making machine is carried out in such a way that the adhesive is invariably applied only to the non-perforated sections which alternate with perforated sections. To this end, the speed of advancement of the web along its path past an adhesive applicator and thereupon through a severing unit (which subdivides the web into a file of successive uniting bands to be wrapped around filter mouthpieces and plain cigarettes) is temporarily altered when a comparison of first signals denoting detection of successive perforated sections of the running web with second signals denoting the frequency of severing of the web in the severing unit indicates the need for a temporary change of the speed of the web upstream of the adhesive applicator. The latter is installed at a fixed distance from the severing unit.

Apparatus for applying adhesive to a running web of wrapping material for smokers products

A paster for the application of a film of water-containing adhesive to a running substrate of cigarette paper or the like automatically replaces the evaporated percentage of water when the substrate-processing machine is idle but the paster continues to circulate adhesive in order to prevent a rise in the viscosity of the then circulating and water releasing adhesive. The quantity of water in the circulating adhesive and other parameters (such as the temperature) of the adhesive are monitored by several sensors, and signals which are transmitted by such sensors are processed to regulate the admission of water in order to maintain the percentage of water, and hence the consistency, of the circulating adhesive within a range not appreciably departing from that when the paster is in actual use to apply one or more films of adhesive to the running substrate.

Apparatus for applying adhesive to a web-shaped carrier

Apparatus for increasing the distance between successive pairs of coaxial plain or filter cigarettes has a first rotary conveyor with axially parallel peripheral flutes which deliver pairs of cigarettes to a transfer station, a second rotary conveyor which receives one cigarette of each pair from the first conveyor by way of a third rotary conveyor and which receives the other cigarette of each pair from a delivering unit positioned to simultaneously move each other cigarette axially of and away from the one cigarette. The delivery unit has two parallel discs which are coupled to each other by cranks having pins provided with flutes for the transfer of other cigarettes from the first conveyor to the second conveyor. The discs rotate about a common axis or about parallel axes inclined relative to the axes of rotation of the first, second and third conveyors. One of the discs receives torque from a gear, a gear transmission or a cardan joint, and the other disc receives torque from the one disc through the cranks.

Apparatus for altering the spacing between pairs of coaxial rod-shaped

Apparatus for converting two parallel files of coaxial cigarettes into a single row of parallel pairs of coaxial cigarettes has a guide which delivers the two files of cigarettes from a twin cigarette maker and a first rotary conveyor with arms for pairs of flutes each of which removes a pair of coaxial cigarettes at a first transfer station. The pairs of cigarettes are transported, without a change of orientation, to a second transfer station between the first rotary conveyor and a second rotary conveyor. The latter has a first set of flutes at its peripheral surface and a second set of flutes on pivotable levers which can pivot the flutes of the second set away from and back toward the peripheral surface of the second conveyor. One flute of each pair of flutes on the first conveyor delivers a pair of cigarettes directly into a flute of the first set, and the other flute of each pair of flutes on the first conveyor delivers a pair of cigarettes into a flute of the second set. The flute of the second set is then pivoted toward the peripheral surface of the second conveyor and comes to rest between two flutes of the first set. The first conveyor transports pairs of cigarettes in a vertical plane.

Apparatus for transporting groups of rod-shaped articles of the tobacco

Apparatus for severing the running web of tipping paper in a filter tipping machine has a rotary drum-shaped counterknife which cooperates with equidistant knives at the periphery of a rotary knife carrier to sever the leader of the running web at regular intervals. The knives are individually adjustable with reference to the counterknife so that their cutting edges merely contact the peripheral surface of the counterknife when they assume severing positions in planes including the axis of rotation of the counterknife, and each knife is unyieldingly held against any movement relative to the carrier when the apparatus is in actual use so that the adjusting mechanisms for the knives need not take up any of the stresses which develop when the knives cooperate with the counterknife to sever the running web.

Apparatus for severing a running web of tipping paper or the like

An intermittently advanced web of wrapping material is subdivided into discrete blanks which are used in a cigarette packing machine for conversion into portions of soft packs by severing the web across its leader during each interval of dwell of the web so as to separate from the web a discrete blank, and by simultaneously removing one corner at the leading edge of the freshly formed blank. This obviates the need for the provision of triangular notches in the one and/or other marginal portion of the web. Successive blanks are transferred from the severing staton by suction arms for delivery into the range of the converting mechanism.

Method of making blanks for use in cigarette packing machines or the like

Apparatus for subdividing a web of wrapping material into sections of predetermined length has a reciprocable carriage for a pair of grippers which are pivotable into engagement with the web to thereby clamp the web against the carriage while the latter moves forwardly. This advances the web through a distance which approximates but is less than the distance necessary to advance the web by the length of a section. The grippers are thereupon disengaged from the web while the carriage continues to move forwardly, and the web is braked by one or more brushes so that two pawls whose pallets are biased against the web can catch up with a pair of marginal notches in the web. The pallets enter the respective marginal notches and complete the forward movement of the web. A mobile knife cooperates with a stationary knife to sever the web and to thus separate a section from the leader of the web while the carriage moves rearwardly. The web is prevented from sharing the rearward movement of the carriage by the bristles of one or more stationary blocking brushes. An electromagnetically actuatable holder is provided to prevent any movements of the web when the making of sections is interrupted on purpose.

A filter tipping machine for the production of filter cigarettes has an apparatus which convolutes adhesive-coated uniting bands around groups of coaxial filter plugs and plain cigarettes while the groups move sideways through a gap which is defined by the convex peripheral surface of a drum-shaped first rolling device and the concave surface of a normally stationary second rolling device. If the surfaces of the rolling devices are contaminated or are likely to be contaminated by adhesive which is removed from the uniting bands during their conversion into tubes while the respective groups advance through the gap, the second rolling device is moved away from the first rolling device and a brush is caused to sweep along the two surfaces to remove the accumulations of adhesive. Widening of the gap and movements of the brush along the two surfaces can be initiated in response to signals which are generated by a jam detector at the inlet of the gap, by a switch which starts the motor of the filter tipping machine, by a switch which arrests the motor, and/or by a switch which is actuated by an attendant whenever the attendant feels that a cleaning of the rolling device is in order.

Apparatus for making and manipulating sheet-like paper, plastic or metallic blanks in a packing machine has a pivotable conveyor with a gripper which pulls the leader of a running web across the path of successive mandrels or cigarette packs on an indexible turret whereby the gripper overcomes the resistance of a mechanical or pneumatic clamping device which holds the leader of the running web in a position in which the leader can be engaged by the gripper when the conveyor completes a return stroke. The running web is severed by a pair of knives which are installed between the clamping device and the gripper and are caused to cut the web when the gripper reaches an end position in which a sufficient length of the running web is moved across the path of an oncoming mandrel or cigarette pack. A fresh web is threaded into the apparatus while the running web is being converted into a succession of blanks, and the leader of the fresh web is held at a preselected locus so that it can be moved into the range of the gripper as soon as the supply of running web is nearly exhausted. The apparatus then ceases to advance the running web and starts to advance the fresh web from the respective bobbin toward the locus where the leader of the fresh web can be engaged by the gripper. The leader of the expired web is moved out of the way not later than when the leader of the fresh web moves into the range of the gripper.
