A cylinder device includes a deflection-controllable cylinder having a rotating hollow cylinder which is longitudinally traversed by a crosshead. Crosshead sags when subjected to a load. The ends of the crosshead, which protrude from the hollow cylinder, are supported by bearings in the cylinder housing that include flat slide surfaces which interact, are hydraulically relieved of load, and absorb the elongation of the crosshead. Also, where applicable, spherical surfaces which interact, are hydraulically relieved of load, and absorb the deflection of the crosshead.

Roller

A driven, deflection-controlled cylinder includes a stationary crosshead that is surrounded by a hollow cylinder. The hollow cylinder has a projection that includes a bushing-like part which encloses the narrow end of the crosshead with a slight radial distance therebetween. A bearing is arranged on the bushing-like part, which is supported in the axially outer part of a bearing bell that is arranged on the outer end of the crosshead. A gear wheel is arranged between the bearing bell and the end of the hollow cylinder, and it engages with a drive pinion in a drive housing. The drive housing is mounted on the side of the projection adjacent to the hollow cylinder, as well as on the outside of the axially outer part of the bearing bell that is opposite the drive pinion.

Deflection-controlled cylinder

In a hydraulically supported roll including a rotatable hollow cylinder and a stationary crosshead, transverse end seals are provided to seal the annular clearance space formed between the crosshead and the inner circumference of the hollow cylinder. Each transverse end seal includes a slide ring having a chamber located on the first surface of the slide ring abutting a counter-ring. The chamber provides hydraulic relief. Radially outside of the chamber a narrow groove is provided which communicates with the low-pressure side of the slide ring via a channel. The channel discharges hydraulic fluid flowing to the first surface of the slide ring as a result of the high pressure in the clearance space.

Transverse end seal for a flexure-controllable roll

A roll arrangement comprises a hydraulically supported bottom roller having rotating hollow cylinder and a stationary crosshead extending lengthwise through the cylinder to form a clearance space therewith. The end of the crosshead are supported by force exerting devices. The forces producing the line pressure of the roll are transferred through a hydraulic supporting device, such as hydraulic fluid contained within a longitudinal pressure chamber in the crosshead, to the inner circumference of the hollow cylinder. When a quick release action is desired to separate the bottom roller from its counterroll, the pressure in the longitudinal chamber is suddenly lowered by opening a quick release valve connected to a return tank. A corresponding reduction of the pressure in the force exerting devices to permit separation of the rollers occurs only after a sensor, such as a dynamometer, has determined that the load on the crosshead has been substantially removed.

A hydrostatically supported roll has several hydrostatic support elements supporting the inner circumference of a rotating hollow roll. The hydrostatic elements are supported on the stationary crosshead that extends through the rotating roll to form a clearance space therewith. Each hydrostatic element has support pockets supplied with a first pressurized fluid via choke canals and branch lines connected to a flow-controlled pump delivering a constant volume of first pressurized liquid, regardless of the counterpressure in the support pockets. The first pressurized liquid fed to the support pockets is temperature-controlled. The support pockets are separated from essentially closed pressure chambers, which are supplied with a second pressure-controlled pressurized liquid from separate feedlines for pressing the hydrostatic elements against the inner circumference of the hollow roll to support same. The second pressurized liquid is not communicated to the inner circumference of the hollow roll. Therefore, independent of any pressure change in the pressure chambers, the same quantity of first pressurized liquid passes over the edges of the support pockets to ensure that the amount of heat transferred to the inner circumference of the hollow roll remains constant.

Hydrostatically supported roll

A hydraulically supported roller comprises a hollow cylinder that rotates about a stationary cross-head. Cylindrical recesses are radially disposed in the cross-head. Piston-like supporting plungers are displaceable in the recesses against the inner circumference of the cylinder. To limit the stroke of the supporting plunger in the cylinder recess and, hence, the displacement of the cylinder relative to the cross-head, at least one conduit is provided, which leads from the interior of the cylindrical recess to the clearance space outside of the cross-head. Pressure fluid is allowed to escape from the cylindrical recess to limit the stroke when the conduit is uncovered at a predetermined stroke by the supporting plunger.

Roller for pressure treatment of a continuous web of material

A roll is provided comprising a rotating hollow roll forming a working circumference and having a stationary crosshead extending therethrough to form a clearance gap therebetween. The entire clearance gap is filled with pressurized fluid. In the crosshead cylinder-like bores are provided with piston-like sealing elements displaceable therein to rest against the inner circumference of the hollow roll. The elements optionally may exert against the inner circumference of the hollow roll a higher or lower pressure relative to the pressure in the gap to create a line pressure or lifting force for shifting the hollow roll in the effective plane.

Roll with controllable line pressure

A floating roll with longitudinal chambers formed in a space between a hollow shell and a cross piece, of which one chamber is the pressure-effective longitudinal chamber, on which the hollow roll is braced via a pressure liquid, has strip-shaped longitudinal seals provided in duplicate and disposed symmetrically relative to the meridian plane separating the longitudinal chambers so that each of the longitudinal chambers can be sealed against the higher liquid pressure and the cross piece need not be turned around for a change in the direction of action.

Floating roll capable of acting in two opposite directions

A controlled deflection roll system includes a rotative cylindrical shell having an outside adapted to form a nip with a counter roll, a non-rotative shaft extending axially through and radially spaced from the shell's inside and having projecting ends to which force is applied to press the shell against the counter roll. Inside the shell pressure elements press the shell in the same direction, the counter roll providing a reaction, and because the shell does not have its ends journaled on the shaft, the shaft can float inside the shell in dependence on the forces involved. Automatic devices automatically responsive to any radial displacement of the shaft relative to the shell control the force applied to the shaft's ends so as to keep the shaft centered at its ends within the shell, permitting the application of a rotary drive to the shell.
