Described are the use of hexopyranose compounds of the formula I ##STR1## for the prophylaxis and treatment of virus infections, and novel pharmaceutical preparations especially suitable for the use in accordance with the invention. The substituents in formula I have the meanings given in the claims.

Use of sugar derivatives for the prophylaxis and treatment of virus

The present invention relates to nasal preparations which contain, as active ingredient, one or more nitrogen-containing polysaccharides obtained from fungi, in particular the polysaccharide krestin, and which exert a prophylactic action lasting several days against infections caused by viruses of the respiratory tract, especially influenza A and B viruses, as well as vaccine nasal preparations which contain the above mentioned active ingredient together with viruses of the respiratory tract of at least one strain and which impart a long-term protective action on single administration. The invention is also concerned with the production and use of these nasal preparations.

Nasal preparation and processes for their production

The invention relates to new pharmaceutical preparations for the topical treatment of infections caused by herpes viruses, especially those which have been caused by herpes virus hominis, for example of herpes genitalis and herpes dermatitis. The preparations contain as antiviral agent a synergistic combination of an acid sulphated polysaccharide or acid sulphated polymer, in particular heparin, and zinc ions, and may further contain polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate and/or -monooleate. They are usual types of preparations for topical administration such as tinctures, solutions, creams, ointments and, especially, gels.
