An energy-absorbing structure is provided, which comprises two generally parallel metal sheets arranged to receive an impacting force against the uppermost sheet and cooperatively prevent an object supported by the uppermost sheet from impacting a basal surface. One metal sheet may be fabricated from expanded metal for its non-isotropic shock-absorbing properties. The other metal sheet may be fabricated from a non-elastic material and arranged to be supported by pins inserted through holes along the perimeter of the sheet, so that when an impacting force is applied, it will resist the force until the force is sufficiently strong so as to shear the pins through the sheet and abruptly release, thus allowing the metal sheet fabricated from expanded metal to absorb the remainder of the impacting force. The invention may find application in vehicles operating in the air, land, or sea.

Shock absorbing apparatus

A energy absorbing structure is disclosed for the purpose of protecting human occupants of a vehicle from the damaging effects of sudden accelerative or decelerative forces by means of plastic deformation of the structure. The structure consists of a generally rectangular sheet of a stranded material, preferably expanded metal, which has nonisotropic properties and which is employed in the construction of the bottom or back of a seating structure for the vehicle occupant. The nonisotropic properties of the sheet allow it to be designed in such a way that it resists deformation when exposed to any force below a specified threshold; beyond the specified threshold, the sheet absorbs the force through plastic deformation, thus attenuating damaging force to which the occupant may be exposed. Such a device may be used in the seating apparatus of various vehicles, including aircraft, automobiles, space vehicles, helicopters, heavy machinery, tractors, military vehicles, and the like.

Energy-absorbing aircraft seat

A fluid collection device having a primary container and a secondary container and a two stage fixation system for facilitating and controlling the fixation of cells in a sample of a biological fluid such as urine. The primary container generally comprises a plastic cup having a filtering apparatus disposed within it for filtering cells from the fluid. The primary container may contain a first stage fixative. The device further comprises a cover comprising a pressurizing chamber for forcing fluid through the filter and fixative delivery chamber for dispensing a fixative into the primary container. The filtered fluid may be reserved within a secondary container attached to the primary container. The filter having the cells retained on its surface is removable from the primary container for the purpose of laboratory analyses of the cells.

Fluid collection device

A fine-needle aspirator for collecting a biosample from a subject into a closed sterile system. The aspirator is adapted for use with a variety of needles and comprises a motor drive pump capable of continuous suction in a biosample collection system. The biosample collection system may comprise a biosample connector such as elastomeric tubing in communication with the needle and a collection space in a biosample container whereby a biosample collected by the needle may be transferred to the collection space. A flushing substance flushes the biosample through the biosample collection system. Additives may be added to the biosample after collection in order to treat, preserve or analyze the biosample.

Biosample aspirator

A controllable variable twist rotor blade assembly wherein the twist along the span of the blade is continuously variable and may be controlled either manually by the pilot or automatically according to data input from flight sensors monitoring flight parameter data. The continuously variable twist of the blade is controlled by an out-of-plane weight assembly having a weight member which is selectively movable between a first position and a second position relative to the elastic axis of the blade so as to optimize the twist of the blade during various flight conditions.

Flushing needle

This invention relates generally to an improved windmill design that combines the blade and rotor support system with the electrical generating system in such a way as to simplify the windmill construction. Specifically, it eliminates the need for shafts, gears, and other coupling devices between the turbine blade system and the electrical generating system. In addition, the windmill design also includes a means for varying the pitch of the turbine blades automatically so as to provide near-optimum blade angles under varying wind conditions, and a tendency toward self-governing at high wind speeds. Furthermore, the blades are attached rigidly to the hub without the need for bearings or other mechanical couplings. Blade pitch changes are produced by twisting the blades elastically by forces produced by fixed weights. The effect of these features individually and in combination is to reduce the complexity of the wind turbine, the generating system, and their associated parts.

Windmill

An improved fluid driven turbine blade system is provided, which is self-governing at relatively high fluid velocities. This is achieved by a combination of two sets of turbine blades, one having a positive efficiency, and the other having a negative efficiency at the fluid velocity at which the self-governing effect occurs. Also provided is a variable friction drive apparatus for powering an energy conversion device. The combination of the improved turbine blade system and the variable friction drive comprises a windmill for driving an electric generator, the windmill having a low required start-up torque at low wind speeds and being self-governing so as not to overspeed the generator at high speeds.
