A tool for machining is made from a hard-metal, cermet or ceramic base material and a single-layer or multi-layer hard material coating on the base material. An additional coating of one or more metals from the group of aluminum, copper, zinc, titanium, nickel, tin or base alloys of these metals is applied to the hard material coating.

Tool for machining

A coated article, in particular a tool for cutting machining, has at least one titanium diboride layer which has been deposited by a thermal CVD process and has a thickness of at least 0.1 &#x3bc;m. The titanium diboride layer has an extremely fine-grained microstructure with an average grain size of not more than 50 nm.
