In order to avoid a pushing-together or pulling apart of an imbricated stack of sheets during reversal around the reversing roller (3) of a rotary sheet feeder (1), belt-like flexible guide means (18) are used which are disposed at intervals over the axial length of the reversing drum (3), one end of the feeder frame side forming an intake gusset while the other end of each is articulated through a spring (19) on a rod (20) which connects the side walls of the feeder frame (7). The flexible guide means (18) pass between the reversing element (13) and the intake side roller (8) of the second belt conveyor (6) which forms the withdrawal table, the reversing element (13) like the other rollers of the second belt conveyor being mounted on a pivotable frame (11) which is articulated in turn on the feeder frame (7) and is initially tensioned in the direction of the reversing drum (3).

Rotary sheet feeder

A guide block (11) has a groove (16) with a flat floor cut into it, in which an endless belt (15) containing perforations (17) travels. A suction opening (18) opens into the floor of the groove (16), to which a vacuum is periodically applied by means of a valve (12). The endless belt (15) travels over a stack (1) of sheets (2) by means of guide rollers (4,5) and a drive roller (3). The vacuum, when periodically applied by the valve (12), operates through the perforations (17) so that the topmost sheet (2) of the stack (1) is sucked against the endless belt (15) and carried away in the same direction (28). One preferred form of the endless belt (15) is a toothed belt, with spaces between the teeth (21) that form vacuum chambers (22). With this compact and therefore easily positionable device, sheets (2) are sucked up from a stack (1) and transported away while maintaining their orientation, meaning that very high production rates are attained.

For simple and rapid tightening of one or more presser belts of a continuous sheet feeder two support-levers are connected to a swivelling shaft next to the feeder frame, at the free ends of which the tension roller is pivoted. Furthermore, a tension lever is connected to the swivelling shaft. A holding member is slidably mounted on the swivelling shaft and can be fixed in any set position. One end of a spring engages the holding member and the other end is pivoted on the feeder.

An apparatus for the stacking of sheets, with a stacking band conveyor, which for both-sided action on a series of scalelike staggered sheets has conveyor belts with conveying surfaces facing each other defining a conveying track therebetween, the latter beginning at its entrance having at least one bend about an axis parallel to the axes of rotation of the conveyor belts and having an exit directed substantially downwardly from above, with a substantially horizontal support on which the exit of the stacking band conveyor is directed and on which the scalelike staggered sheets are pushed together in the staggering succession into a stack with sheets standing substantially vertically on their edges, and with a feeder which feeds the sheets to the entrance of the stacking band conveyor. The bend at the entrance of the stacking band conveyor is convex viewed from above, so that the lagging edge of each sheet fed from the feeder to the entrance to the stacking band conveyor lifts from the feeder. The stacking band conveyor is driveable with a conveying speed which is so much smaller than the feeding speed of the feeder that the lifted lagging edge of a preceeding sheet is run under by the sheet lagging at a distance on the feeder. A sensor switches off the stacking band conveyor when a following sheet does not run under the lifted lagging edge of the sheet which was picked up by the stacking band conveyor.
