The present invention relates to an apparatus for continuous treatment of two immiscible molten liquids having different densities. The apparatus comprises at least one open-ended helical reaction channel () arranged inside a substantially vertical housing (), means for the continuous supply of the liquid with the higher density to the upper open end of said at least one reaction channel () and means for continuous supply of the liquid with the lower density to the lower open end of said at least one helical reaction channel (), means for continuous removal of the liquid with the higher density at the lower open end of said helical reaction channel and means for removal of the liquid with the lower density from the upper open end of said helical reaction channel (). The invention further relates to a method for continuous treatment of two immiscible molten liquids having different densities using the apparatus of the present invention.

The invention relates to a rapidly solidified silicon-based alloy, containing 2-40% by weight Al, 2-45% by weight Ti, 0-10% by weight of one or more of the elements V, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, Co, 0-1% by weight of one or more of the elements B, Sr and P, the rest, except for impurities, being silicon in an amount of at least 35% by weight. The invention further relates to a method for producing such alloys where a molten alloy is provided and is solidified at a rate of solidification of at least 10.sup.3 .degree. C./second. Consolidated products are produced from the silicon-based alloy by forming articles from powdered alloy and consolidating the formed articles.

The present invention relates to a method for granulating a stream of molten metal which falls from a launder or the like, down into a liquid cooling bath contained in a tank. The metal stream divides into droplets in the liquid cooling bath and the droplets solidify and form solid granules. The cooling liquid has substantially uniform flow across the tank in a direction that is substantially perpendicular to the falling metal stream. The flow of cooling liquid has a velocity of less than 0.1 m/sec. The distance from the outlets of the launder to the surface of the liquid cooling bath is kept less than 100 times the diameter of the metal stream measured as the metal stream leaves the launder.

The present invention relates to a silicon powder, which is characterized in that it is produced by gas atomizing of molten silicon and having a particle size between 0,1 and 1000 .mu.m, a specific surface area between 0.001 and 1 m.sup.2 /g, and the following chemical composition in percent by weight: 0.1-1% iron, 0.01-1% aluminium, 0-8% copper, 0-1% calcium, 0-1% zinc, 0-1% tin, 0-5% boron, 0-0.5% phosphorus, 0-0.5% sodium, 0-0.5% lithium, 0-0.5% potassium, 0-0.5% magnesium, 0-0.5% strontium, 0-0.5% barium, 0-0.5% beryllium, the rest being silicon and less than 0.3% impurities such as Ti, V, Cr, Mo, W and Zr.

Silicon powder and a method for producing silicon powder by gas

The present application relates to a method for production of trichloromonosilane in a fluidized bed reactor by reaction of silicon powder and HCl at a temperature between 280.degree. and 300.degree. C. wherein silicon powder which has been produced by gas atomization of molten silicon is used. The gas atomized silicon powder has a preferred particle size between 1 and 1000 .mu.m.
