An electronic system for identifying an article can include a printed memory having a plurality of contact pads electrically coupled to a plurality of landing pads positioned on a first side of a printed circuit board (PCB) substrate. The plurality of landing pads can be electrically coupled to a plurality of endless, concentric contact lines positioned on a second side of the PCB substrate through a plurality of vias that extend through a thickness of the PCB substrate and a plurality of traces that electrically couple the plurality of vias with the plurality of landing pads. To perform a memory operation on the printed memory, contact probes of a reader are physically and electrically contacted with the plurality of concentric contact lines. In some implementations, the memory operation can be performed on the printed memory irrespective of a rotational orientation of the printed memory relative to the reader.

Methods herein form a photoresist on an exterior of a cylinder and expose the photoresist to a light source while rotating the cylinder. Such methods develop the photoresist, after exposing, to change the photoresist into a patterned protective layer on the exterior of the cylinder. Then, these methods pattern the exterior of the cylinder while rotating the cylinder using the patterned protective layer to produce a patterned cylinder.

A grid connector for communicating with a printed memory includes a substrate and a plurality of first conductive pads coupled to the substrate. Each of the first conductive pads protrudes outward with respect to an outer surface of the substrate. A subset of the first conductive pads is configured to contact a second conductive pad of the printed memory, regardless of an orientation of the printed memory with respect to the grid connector as long as the second conductive pad is within a boundary of the first conductive pads.

An exemplary grounding device includes an electrically conductive planar member having a hollow, central opening. Arms extend from inner edges of the hollow, central opening of the planar member. Each arm is angled relative to a surface of the planar member and each arm includes a facing portion having an electrically conductive cushion attached thereto. Each arm is approximately the same size and is configured to contact a shaft extending through the hollow, central opening of the planar member to form an electrical connection between the planar member and the shaft. The electrically conductive cushion is between the arm and the shaft. A tab projection extends from an outer edge of the planar member. Each tab projection is in the same plane as the planar member.

A ground plate includes an electrically conductive planar member having a long axis and a perpendicular short axis. The planar member has an elongated hexagonal shape having two opposing long sides, two opposing relatively shorter sides, and four angled sides between the long sides and the relatively shorter sides with a hollow central opening. Spring clips extend from inner edges of the hollow central opening. The inner edges from which the spring clips extend are parallel to the long axis. Each spring clip includes a distal end portion curving outward from the hollow central opening and is configured to contact a shaft extending through the hollow central opening to form an electrical connection between the planar member and the shaft. A tab projection extends from an outer edge of each of the relatively shorter sides. Each tab projection is in the same plane as the planar member.

A system and method is provided for determining the location of one or more biased transfer rolls relative to associated photoreceptors in a printer. The one or more biased transfer rolls can be moved into contact with an intermediate transfer surface bringing the surface into contact with associated photoreceptors to form a closed biased transfer roll image transfer nip for transferring an image from the photoreceptor to the intermediate transfer surface. The open or closed condition of the biased transfer roll image transfer nip is determined by applying a constant current to the biased transfer roll and evaluating a voltage at the biased transfer roll. The open or closed condition of different image transfer nips can be determined in a similar manner. A plurality of biased transfer rolls can be ganged together for simultaneous movement with respect to associated photoreceptors to form a plurality of image transfer nips, the open and closed condition which can also be determined.

Aspects of the disclosure can provide a method for replacing a customer replaceable unit (CRU) in a printing system. The method can include determining a historic usage pattern for a CRU during a usage of the CRU, calculating a remaining time for the CRU based on the historic usage pattern, and signaling a user for ordering a new CRC when the remaining time for the CRU is substantially equivalent to a pre-determined value.

A printing apparatus and corresponding method for maintaining a level of a marking material in a marking material waste sump of a printing apparatus to a desired level. The printing apparatus includes a photoreceptor, a cleaning blade for cleaning marking material from the photoreceptor, a waste sump containing the marking material cleaned from the photoreceptor by the cleaner blade, the waste sump including an auger for selectively removing a portion of the marking material from the waste sump when activated, a determining device for determining a level of the marking material in the waste sump, and a controller receiving the determined level of the marking material from the determining device, the controller maintaining the level of the marking material in the waste sump to at or above a desired level by selectively activating the auger when the level of the marking material rises to a predetermined level and deactivating the auger when the level of the marking material is at the desired level, the desired level of the marking material providing a portion of the marking material to the photoreceptor to be used as lubricant between the photoreceptor and the cleaner blade.

Method and apparatus for controlling level of marking material in a waste sump

A xerographic marking engine adjusts a charging actuator value, such as an AC peak-to-peak voltage or an AC peak-to-peak current, based on a determined knee value, V, of a charge curve for an imaging apparatus photoreceptor within the xerographic marking engine and environmental sensor data. The environmental sensor data may measure environment temperature and environment humidity. In near A-zone environments, for example, operational environments in which the temperature is 80 degrees Fahrenheit and the relative humidity is 80%, the charging actuator value may be selected to achieve a predetermined photoreceptor wear rate that avoids print quality defects due to lateral charge migration. In other than A-zone environments, the charging actuator value may be selected to minimize the photoreceptor wear rate, while avoiding print quality defects. The described approach allows optimal photoconductor wear to be achieved, in all operational environments, without increasing the risk of print quality defects.

A guide is used to protect a corona cartridge during shipping and during insertion into an electrostatic marking apparatus. The guide has dimensions that will permit the cartridge to fit therein and has a locking mechanism that securely holds the cartridge in place during shipment or movement. When the cartridge is to be removed from the guide and inserted into an electrostatic marking system, a handle attached to a latch is used to free the latch from a groove in the guide. The groove in the guide is located between two upwardly protruding ramps having a slidable side and a locking side that abuts the latch and holds it in place until activation when the latch handle frees it from the groove.
