A mold temperature control system comprises a mold section having a cavity, a fluid circuit to distribute a flow of a conditioning fluid, the fluid circuit being positioned spaced apart from the cavity, a temperature sensor positioned in the mold to generate a signal representative of a temperature in the mold, a controllable supply of the conditioning fluid, and a controller for automatically initiating flow of the conditioning fluid through the fluid circuit in response to an initiation temperature and for automatically terminating flow of the conditioning fluid through the fluid circuit in response to a termination temperature.

Mold temperature control for casting system

This invention relates to a casting machine furnace apparatus including a casting machine furnace, a supply furnace in fluid communication with the machine furnace and operative to supply a molten metal to the machine furnace, and a stopper module device disposed in a fluid path between the casting machine furnace and the supply furnace. The stopper module device includes a block housing and a stopper assembly. The block housing includes an inlet opening and an outlet opening, and is disposed in the fluid path. The stopper assembly is supported for movement relative to the inlet opening of the block housing between a working position, wherein the molten metal flows from the supply furnace to the casting machine furnace, and a non-working position, wherein the flow of molten metal is prevented.

A method for producing a sand core includes the following steps: (a) providing a casting mold having a mold cavity, the casting mold including at least one first conduit and at least one second conduit; (b) providing a sand core disposed in the mold cavity; (c) providing a supply of conditioning gas to the casting mold, the conditioning gas being supplied to the casting mold through at least one of the first and second conduits; (d) providing a controller connected to the first conduit and the second conduit to selectively control the supply of conditioning gas; (e) providing a gas exhaust unit operatively connected to the casting mold; (f) operating the gas exhaust unit to cause the conditioning gas to be moved through the sand core; and (g) removing the sand core from the casting mold.

Method for producing a sand core

A zinc alloy melt-out core comprises from 0.75% to 3% Cu, from 0% to 0.3% Ni, from 0% to 0.5% Al, and balance Zn. The zinc alloy melt-out core is used in pressure casting processes for producing an aluminum article having a hollow. The zinc alloy core has a shape-imparting outer surface. In the pressure casting process, the zinc alloy core preserves a space corresponding to the hollow. The zinc alloy core has improved hot strength and thus maintains its integrity during the pressure casting process, inhibiting seepage of the core material into the aluminum cast article. Preferred zinc alloy melt-out cores further comprise an outer coating of insulating material selected from the group consisting of mica, graphite, ceramics and combinations thereof.

Pressure casting method with recoverable melt out core

A melt-out zinc core is coated with insulating mica material and a graphite release agent and supported within a die cavity of a high pressure squeeze casting apparatus. Molten casting metal having a melting temperature above that of the core is injected into the die and then pressurized to about 15,000 psi to squeeze form the article in the die and around the core. The resultant article and core are then heated to above the melting temperature of the core and the core extracted from the article through cast-in outlet openings formed by the core. The insulating material and release agent are also extracted from the cast article by rinsing the cored passages of the cast article with water.

Method of squeeze casting metal articles using melt-out metal core

A method for metallurgically bonding cylinder liners (12, 12') within a cylinder block 14 of an internal combustion engine. The liners (12, 12') are cleaned (16) and their outer surfaces coated (18) with a low melting point cooling material (20) such as molten zinc forming a metallurgical bond therebetween. The coating (20) is allowed to solidify forming an outer oxidized layer (24) on the coating (20). The oxidized layer (24) is subsequently removed to expose an unoxidized outer surface (26) of the coating (20). The coated liners (12, 12') are then disposed within a casting mold and molten aluminum-based cylinder block material (36) is poured into the mold and about the coated liners (12, 12'). The molten cylinder block material (36) remelts the coating (20) on the liners (12, 12') and causes the coating to further alloy with the cylinder block material (36), whereupon cooling the cylinder liners (12, 12') are metallurgically bonded to the cylinder block (14).

Method for metallurgically bonding cylinder liners to a cylinder block

An intake manifold (10) includes cast plenum (12) and flange (14) members defining a plurality of outlet (22) and inlet (24) holes therein. Tubes (16) have opposite first (44) and second (46) ends which are received into the outlet (22) and inlet (24) holes with an interference fit and joined thereto with metallurgical bonds (48,50) comprising a low melting point metal coating material (52), such as zinc, alloyed with the tube metal and each of the plenum and flange metals. The method includes coating the ends (44,46) of the tubes (16) and the walls of the holes (22,24) with the molten coating material (52), heating the plenum (12) and flange (14) to an elevated temperature and then forcing the tubes (16) into the holes (22) to form the metallurgical bonds (48,50).

A vacuum-assisted countergravity casting apparatus 10 includes a casting mold 14 disposed on a cheek mold member 28 and supported within a vacuum box 40. The mold 14 includes bottom feed gates 24 communicating with a cavity 22 within the mold 14. The cheek mold member 28 has distribution channels 30 formed in its upper surface 32 and includes a bottom ingate passage 34. A feed stalk 42 is connected to the ingate passage 34 for immersion into an underlying supply of molten metal 12. Actuation of vacuum pump 52 produces a vacuum within the vacuum chamber 46 and draws the molten metal upwardly to fill the cavity 22. Once filled, the mold 14 is pushed sideways on the cheek 28 by ram 68 causing the feed gates 24 to move out of registry with the distribution channels 30. The molten metal is thereby retained in the cavity 22 without assistance from the vacuum.

A method for metallurgically bonding a cylinder liner 22 within a clinder block 14 of an automotive engine includes coating the outer surface of the liner 22 with a low melting point molten metal coating material 24, such as a zinc, as well as cylinder walls of the block 14 and then allowing the coatings to solidify. The block 14 and liner 22 are then heated to an elevated temperature and the liner 22 press-fit into the block 14. This causes the coating materials to alloy with the liner and block metal as well as one another, forming a metallurgical bond between the block 14 and liner 22 when cooled.

A mold within which molten metal is sand cast, is provided with strategically located chill plates which shape and rapidly cool the molten metal at predetermined locations for hardening those locations relative to the hardness of the remainder of the casting. The mold is formed of a cope and drag frame type flask within which sand is compacted to form the sand cavity. Plates are arranged transversely of the casting cavity and are secured to portions of the flask frame for dissipating heat through the plates and out through the frame. The plates are fixed to portions of the flask and are arranged in opposing pairs which are aligned, coplanar, in abutting relationship. Each plate of each pair is provided with a notch, aligned with its opposite plate, for encircling the portion of the casting to be chill hardened. The pattern used for forming the cavity extends through the aligned notches and between the plates to form the composite sand and metal plate casting surface in the cavity.

Apparatus for the vacuum-assisted, countergravity casting of thin-walled metal parts includes a plurality of expendable casting molds supported on a top side of a reusable drag slab. Each casting mold includes a mold cavity and a mold ingate passage extending from the mold cavity into registry with a respective underlying slab ingate passage that extends between the top side and a bottom side of the drag slab and that optionally includes a molten metal filter therein. When the bottom side of the drag slab is immersed in an underlying molten metal pool with the mold cavities evacuated, the molten metal is drawn upwardly through each slab ingate passage and the molten metal filter therein and then through each mold ingate passage registered therewith into each mold cavity. The molten metal filter in each slab ingate passage removes inclusion-forming impurities from the molten metal as it is drawn upwardly into each mold cavity. The presence of objectionable, non-metallic inclusions that can adversely affect part performance is thereby minimized in the thin-walled parts cast in the molds. The drag slab can be reused in the casting of successive sets of expendable casting molds.

Apparatus for the vacuum countergravity casting of metal in shell molds including a gas-permeable upper shell mold portion secured to a bottom mold portion and together secured to the mouth of a vacuum box by a plurality of threadable mounting sites engaged by self-tapping threads on the ends of rotatable shafts reciprocally slidable through the ceiling of the box. Each shaft has a stop fixed thereto at a predetermined distance above the threads for pressing the upper shell mold portion into sealing engagement with the bottom mold portion in order to eliminate the need to glue the upper and lower mold portions together.
