The invention provides a method for determining an orientation of a tool for performing a medical intervention on a subject. The method includes obtaining image data for an image of a surface of, or over, a subject, a tool adjacent the surface and a tool shadow on the surface, the tool shadow resulting from light incident on the tool generated by way of at least one light source positioned at a predetermined position relative to the image sensor. A representation of the surface is obtained and representations of the tool and the tool shadow are segmented from the image data and used to determine an elevation angle of the tool. The orientation of the tool is determined based on the segmented representation of the tool, the segmented representation of the tool shadow and the elevation angle.

The treatment device is configured to apply a light pulse to skin of a subject to perform a treatment operation to hairs on the skin. According to various embodiments, a method of modifying an appearance of hair in an image of a head of a subject is disclosed. The method comprises providing, as an input to a first trained neural network model, an image of a head of a subject having a region of hair; generating, using the first trained neural network model and based on the image of the head, a hair layer comprising an estimated representation of portions of the image containing hair, and a face layer comprising an estimated representation of the head of the subject with the region of hair having been removed; providing, as an input to a second trained neural network model, an indication of a defined hairstyle to be incorporated into the image, and the generated hair layer; generating, using the second trained neural network model, a modified hair layer based on the indication of the defined hairstyle and the generated hair layer; and generating, using a processor, a modified image of the head of the subject by applying the modified hair layer to the generated face layer.

An apparatus and method for tracking a head of a subject in a series of images includes receiving a series of images of at least a portion of a subject's head; tracking a position of the subject's head in the series of images based on positions of a first plurality of primary features of the subject's head; determining a first confidence level of the position of the subject's head based on the positions of the first plurality of primary features; monitoring a position of a secondary feature; and upon determining that the first confidence level is below a defined threshold, tracking the position of the subject's head based on the position of the secondary feature rather than the positions of the primary features.

Each successive structured lighting pattern has a first and second subset of intensity features such as edges between light and dark areas.
