The invention relates to an antimicrobial phosphate glass having the following composition in percent by weight on an oxide basis: PO&#x3e;66-80 percent by weight; SO0-40 percent by weight; B00-1 percent by weight; AlO&#x3e;6.2-10 percent by weight; SiO0-10 percent by weight; NaO&#x3e;9-20 percent by weight; CaO 0-25 percent by weight; MgO 0-15 percent by weight; SrO 0-15 percent by weight; BaO 0-15 percent by weight; ZnO&#x3e;0-25 percent by weight; AgO 0-5 percent by weight; CuO 0-10 percent by weight; GeO0-10 percent by weight; TeO0-15 percent by weight; CrO0-10 percent by weight; J 0-10 percent by weight; F 0-3 percent by weight.

Antimicrobial phosphate glass

The invention describes a glass and a glass-ceramic which at least includes the constituents SiO, AlOand YOand is preferably doped with rare earth ions. The weight ratio between the weight of YOand the total weight of SiO, AlOand YOis at least 0.2, preferably at least 0.4 or more. The rare earth ions can preferably be incorporated in crystal phases which are precipitated out of glass with a high yttrium content.

Conversion material

The invention provides an antimicrobial phosphate glass composition including, in weight percent based on oxide: greater than 45 to 90 of PO, 0 to 60 of BO, 0 to 40 of SiO, 0 to 20 weight percent of AlO, 0 to 30 of SO, 0 to 0.1 of LiO, 0 to 0.1 of NaO, 0 to 0.1 of KO, 0 to 40 of CaO, 0 to 40 of MgO, 0 to 15 of SrO, 0 to 40 of BaO, 0 to 40 of ZnO, 0 to 5 of AgO, 0 to 15 of CuO, 0 to 10 of CrO, 0 to 10 of I&#x2014;, 0 to 10 of TeO, 0 to 10 of GeO, 0 to 10 of TiO, 0 to 10 of ZrO, 0 to 10 of LaO, 0 to 5 of NbO, 0 to 5 of CeO, 0 to 5 of FeO, 0 to 5 of WO, 0 to 5 of BiO, and 0 to 5 of MoO.

Antimicrobial phosphate glass with adapted refractive index

Phosphate glass fibers are an attractive alternative to silica fibers because they can be co-doped with much higher concentrations of Yb and Er and exhibit a higher optical gain per unit length. However, in such fibers the absorption of the pump is high and heating effects caused by the pump laser can cause a significant change in refractive index. This problem is overcome with a phosphate glass composition that exhibits a temperature coefficient of refractive index &bgr;&equals;dn/dT close to zero. This is achieved by avoiding alkali metal oxides in the glass composition and by adjusting the concentration of the network modifiers such as BaO.
