The invention relates to the utilization of a highly fluorinated oligomeric alkane as a therapeutic agent in ophthalmology, the alkane having the general formula [&#x2014;R(CH)CR&#x2014;CR&#x2014;], wherein Ris a linear or branched perfluorinated alkyl chain CFto CF, Rand Rare independently selected from the group consisting of H, CH, CHand CH, n is selected from the numbers 0, 1 and 2, and x is a number between 2 and 6, with a molar mass of at least 750. According to the invention, a pharmacological agent is provided that is used in ophthalmology and that causes little or no damage to the retina even when used over a long period.

Utilization of a highly fluorinated oligomeric alkane in ophthalmology

An operation kit is provided for access into the subretinal region of the eye. The kit comprises an elongated flat body of soft material, which can be inserted into the subretinal region from the side through an incision in the sclera. The body is formed as a strip, whose one surface is configured as a guiding surface for a medical device, for example for implanting a microphotodiode chip.

Method and device for entering the subretinal region of the eye

The present invention concerns fluorocarbons for use in ophthalmology. Fluorocarbons disclosed in the prior art can only be left in the eye for a limited period of time because they cause damage to the retina or intraocular structure. The present invention provides an oxygen-fluorocarbon mixture having a dissolved oxygen content of less than 6% by volume, which can be used as an ophthalmological agent for longer periods of time than conventional fluorocarbons, with little or no damage to the retina or intraocular structures. The invention also provides a process for preparing the oxygen-fluorocarbon mixture. In one embodiment, up to 20% by volume of a second gas, such as carbon dioxide or nitric oxide, is combined with the oxygen-fluorocarbon mixtures.
