A radio frequency (RF) transmitter is coupled to and controlled by a processor to transmit data. A physical layer circuit is coupled to the RF transmitter to encode and decode between a digital signal and a modulated analog signal. The physical layer circuit comprises a high rate physical layer circuit (HRP) and a low rate physical layer circuit (LRP). In a first embodiment, the LRP circuit generates a LRP packet comprising an LRP transmit power control feedback. In a second embodiment, the LRP and HRP circuit generate a packet comprising a beam-forming phase and magnitude feedback information. In a third embodiment, the LRP and HRP circuit supports up to 64 independent transmit antenna elements.

Extensions to adaptive beam-steering method

A radio frequency (RF) transmitter has a plurality of digitally controlled phased array antennas coupled to and controlled by the processor to transmit data. The processor is to enable one or more antennas to be turned off during a use of the apparatus to reduce a power consumption of the apparatus.

A pipelined cell search apparatus having a primary search stage, a secondary stage and a Gold code stage. The primary stage receives a primary synchronization channel (P-SCH) signal, detects a maximum peak of a slot boundary in the P-SCH signal, and generates slot timing data from the maximum peak. The secondary search stage receives a secondary synchronization channel (S-SCH) signal and the slot timing data, and detects in the S-SCH signal a maximum peak of a frame boundary. The secondary search stage generates frame timing data and a group ID of a base station transmitting the P-SCH signal and the S-SCH signal. The Gold code search stage receives a common control pilot channel (CPICH) signal, the slot timing data, the frame timing data, and the group ID and detects in the CPICH signal a maximum peak associated with a Gold code of the base station.

Apparatus and method for use in packet data communication from a single-input-multiple-output/multiple-input-single-output (SIMO/MISO) transceiver to a single-input-single-output (SISO) transceiver. A pipelined cell search apparatus comprises a secondary search stage that receives a secondary synchronization channel (S-SCH) signal. The secondary search stage comprises: 1) a correlation block for i) correlating the S-SCH signal with a 256-bit sequence z to produce a first correlated output sequence and ii) correlating the first correlated output sequence with sixteen Hadamard sequences to produce a vector output sequence, each vector comprising sixteen Hadamard-correlated values, one for each of the sixteen Hadamard sequences; 2) a maximum detection block for detecting a maximum Hadamard-correlated value in the each vector and generating an index sequence, each index identifying a vector position of the maximum Hadamard-correlated value; 3) a Reed-Solomon (R-S) decoding correction block for decoding and correcting 15 consecutive indexes in the index sequence and determining therefrom a codeword of length 3; and 4) a frame-time detector for determining from the codeword of length 3 a frame boundary of the S-SCH signal based on syndrome properties of an R-S code associated with the S-SCH code.

Apparatus and method for secondary synchronization channel detection in a 3GPP WCDMA receiver

A signal-to-noise estimator is provided for estimating the signal-to-noise ratio in wireless fading channels. The estimator can be applied to likelihood ratio estimation of turbo decoders in third generation wide-band code division multiple access (WCDMA) systems. Time-multiplexed samples of pilot symbols from a wireless receiver are supplied to the estimator to obtain individual estimates of signal power and/or noise power. The estimator uses a de-correlating filter in which the coefficients are known functions (such as eigen-vectors) of the auto-correlation matrix for a wireless channel. The decorrelating filter is used by the estimator to map an observation vector into a set of statistically independent samples. The energy of each vector component is computed individually and combined to produce an aggregate sum for the vector. The aggregate sum can be subtracted from the pilot tone power in order to produce an estimate of noise power.
