A constant velocity connection for use in a drill string can include at least one ball-and-socket joint, and an insert rotationally received in an opening formed laterally through a ball of the joint. A method of constructing a constant velocity connection can include installing an insert in an opening formed in a ball of at least one ball-and-socket joint of the constant velocity connection, and allowing the insert to rotate in the opening about a lateral axis. A drill string can include a drilling motor, a drill bit, and a constant velocity connection connected between the drilling motor and the drill bit, the constant velocity connection including at least one ball-and-socket joint, and an insert rotationally received in an opening formed laterally through a ball of the joint.

Drill string constant velocity connection

A directional drilling system for use in drilling a wellbore can include a bit deflection assembly with a bit axis deflection mechanism which applies a deflecting force to a shaft connected to a drill bit. The deflecting force may deflect the shaft, without being reacted between the deflection mechanism and the drill bit. The deflecting force may deflect the shaft between the drill bit and a radial bearing which maintains the shaft centered in the bit deflection assembly. The deflection mechanism may both angularly deflect and laterally displace the bit axis in the deflection mechanism.

Directional drilling systems

A tool module interconnect () for interconnecting to adjoining modules for insertion in a drill string features a system which permits making the electrical interconnection before assembly of the mechanical connections to interconnect the tool modules together. The interconnect comprises a hollow interconnect body () open at both ends. A wire harness () is provided in the hollow body with terminal end connectors () accessible from the respective open end of the interconnect body. The interconnect is adapted for attachment to adjoining modules, where at least one end has a rotatable threaded sleeve () for connection to a tool module by a threaded collar.
