A method of registration in a telecommunications system by a mobile station, which system includes a home location register for maintaining subscriber data and supports a first network, such as GSM, and a second network, such as GPRS. The home location register maintains the mobile subscriber data and a message is sent to the home location register for requesting the mobile subscriber data. The home location register maintains an access parameter which indicates whether the mobile subscriber is entitled to use the first network, the second network or both networks. In response to said message for requesting the subscriber data, the home location register sends the mobile subscriber data and also the access parameter. The network element that requested the mobile subscriber data uses said access parameter for restricting the access of the mobile subscriber only to a circuit-switched network and/or to a packet-switched network.

Radio network access mechanism

A method of arranging data protection in a telecommunication system including a first mobile communication network, a second mobile communication network, and a mobile station supporting both of the mobile communication networks is disclosed. The method includes ciphering traffic between the mobile station and the first mobile communication network using a first cipher key; calculating a second cipher key to be used for ciphering traffic between the mobile station and the second mobile communication network in the first mobile communication network when the mobile station operates in the first mobile communication network; transmitting information necessary for calculating the second cipher key from the first mobile communication network to the mobile station when the mobile station operates in the first mobile communication network; and calculating the second cipher key at the mobile station to be used for ciphering traffic between the mobile station and the second mobile communication network.

Arranging authentication and ciphering in mobile communication system

The invention relates to a method and to associated radio access networks and network elements for assigning values of service attributes to transmissions between a user equipment and a radio access network. In order to allow for an improved assignment of values of service attributes, it is proposed that, upon request of such a transmission by a user equipment of a subscriber registered with some radio access network the method comprises determining values of service attributes that are to be used for the transmission requested by said user equipment based on at least one value of at least one service attribute defined by a stored subscriber specific service profile, and based on at least one stored common value of at least one service attribute.

Method for assigning values of service attributes to transmissions, radio access networks and network elements

A method of limiting the quality of service of data transmission in a wireless telecommunications system, in which the quality of service of data transmission is defined by means of quality of service parameters. Subscriber-specific maximum values are defined for the quality of service parameters and stored in a database comprising subscriber data. When the terminal requests connection establishment defined with quality of service parameters, the subscriber-specific maximum values are checked in the database and they are compared with the quality of service parameters requested by the terminal. Depending on whether the quality of service parameters requested by the terminal are within the limits defined by the maximum values of the parameters or whether at least one quality of service parameter requested by the terminal exceeds the maximum value defined for said parameter, either a connection is established or connection establishment is rejected.
