A size composition for the surface sizing of paper, board or other suchlike. The size composition comprises a size fraction which comprises a water-soluble, principal component made up of, for example, starch, polyvinyl alcohol, carboxymethyl cellulose, glucomannan, protein, or mixtures thereof, and a pigment fraction formed by mixing together a mineral material, which in the main comprises talc particles and/or other phyllosilicate particles, and a binder such as a synthetic polymer, latex and/or other corresponding binder. The size composition is prepared by mixing together the said size fraction and pigment fraction.

Method of making a surface size composition

A cationic starch product, the making of it and its use. The starch product comprises starch (St) and a cationising reagent, which is made from choline or its synthetic equivalent, whereby the cationising reagent has reacted with a part of the hydroxyl groups of the starch according to the structure formula (VI) or (VII). The structure component A is a hydrocarbon chain. The substituents R are hydrogens; lower or higher acrylic alkly groups, substituted or unsubstituted cycloalklyl groups; substituted or unsubstituted aryl or heteroaryl groups; lower or higher alkyl groups or non-aromatic heterocyclic groups containing alkoxy groups or other hetero atoms.

The invention relates to a starch-based polymer dispersion, which contains a copolymer of starch with monomers. The invention also relates to a process for the preparation of said dispersion and its use as a surface sizing additive for paper and as a wet- and dry-strengthener for paper which is added to the wet end of the paper machine.

Polymer dispersion and method to produce the same

The present invention relates to method of forming a transparent and gas-permeability decreasing coating by virtue of applying a coating containing at least one polymer dispersion on a sheet of paper, board or similar cellulosic fiber based web in at least one coating step. The method according to the invention is based on the use of a polymer dispersion containing extremely pure talc particles having a degree of purity of 90-100% and a particle size of 90% smaller than 40 &mgr;m.

The invention relates to coated board, a process for its manufacture, and containers and packaging formed therefrom. The board comprises at least one polymer-based coat preventing the transmission of liquids and gases, which coat is according to the invention made from a polymer dispersion to which talc particles are added so that talc will constitute 30-80% of the dry weight of the dried coat. The invention relates to a polymer dispersion, by means of which the rheological properties and structure of various liquid and flowing mixtures may be adjusted. The dispersion is prepared by radical polymerizing, into a water soluble chain backbone polymer or into such a polymer brought water soluble, in a water solution at least one .alpha.-, .beta.-unsaturated carboxyl acid containing 3-8 carbons as well as at least one to a limited amount unsaturated monomer. The chain backbone polymer is preferably a starch derivative.
