Methods for the rapid detection of the presence or absence of Herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2) in a biological or non-biological sample are described. The methods can include performing an amplifying step, a hybridizing step, and a detecting step. Furthermore, primers, probes targeting the genes for HSV-1 viral DNA polymerase B (HSV-1 Pol) and HSV-1 thymidine kinase C (HSV-1 TK), and also target the genes for HSV-2 thymidine kinase C (HSV-2 TK) and HSV-2 glycoprotein B (HSV-2 gB), along with kits are provided that are designed for the detection of HSV-1 and/or HSV-2.

Compositions and methods for detection of herpes simplex virus 1 and 2

Methods for detecting HAV in a biological sample are provided, comprising amplifying a target nucleic acid comprising the sequence of HAV in a reaction mixture. The reaction mixture comprises a biological sample which may contain the target nucleic acid and set of oligonucleotides. The invention also provides kits for the detection of HAV.

The nucleotide sequence of a region of the 18S ribosomal RNA gene of a strain of P. carinii derived from humans is provided. The primers amplify regions of the 18S ribosomal RNA gene and hybridize to regions containing variability among strains. Probes hybridize to a regions within the amplified region that contain variability among strains.

Primers and probes can be used to detect nucleic acid from Mycobacterium in a sample and determine the species from which the nucleic acid originates. The primers amplify regions of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene and hybridize to regions conserved among species. Genus specific probes hybridize to sequences within the amplified region conserved among mycobacterial species, whereas the species specific probes hybridize to a variable region, so that the species identity can be uniquely determined. Consensus probes for detecting mycobacteria nucleic acids are provided which probes are not identical to any of the sequences of mycobacterial species.
