To address the need for a method to determine an optimal quantity of channel resources to reserve for data services in communication systems that support both data and voice services, the present invention provides two methods. The methods determine a minimum quantity of voice channel resources that are required to provide an acceptable voice quality of service. The methods also determine an additional quantity of data channel resources needed to provide data services. The methods then determine whether encroachment by the voice services onto the data channel resources requires that a number of the data channel resources be reserved for data services exclusively. Finally, if data channel resources need to be reserved, the methods determine a minimum number of data channel resources to reserve to provide an acceptable data quality of service.

Method for determining a quantity of channel resources to reserve for data services in a communication system

In a wireless communication system, session timers are separately maintained by a communication device (101) and a system controller (104). When a portion of outbound data is sent to a base station (102) for transmission to the communication device, the base station creates at least one transmission time stamp which is then sent to the system controller (203). If a session has not been previously established, the system controller uses the at least one transmission time stamp to establish a session and initiate a session timer (204). If a session has been previously established, the system controller uses the at least one transmission time stamp to determine whether to continue the current session timer (709). This applies to inbound data as well. Furthermore, session timers can also be synchronized to paging acknowledgments (305), channel information messages (503) or channel access messages (602). In this manner, session timers are more accurately synchronized.

Method for synchronizing a session timer

A packet data communication system (100) employs a method and apparatus for tracking data packets in the packet data communication system. A sending communication device (e.g., 101) transmits a data packet (130) to a receiving communication device (e.g., 105), wherein the data packet includes a respective packet sequence number (131). Responsive to the transmission, the sending device increases a transmit tracking number (V(S)) that is used to indicate the packet sequence number of the data packet that is next in sequence to be transmitted. Upon receiving the data packet, the receiving device transmits an acknowledgment data packet (140) to the sending device, wherein the acknowledgment data packet includes a receive tracking number (139). The receive tracking number indicates the packet sequence number of the data packet that the receiving device expects to receive next. Upon receiving the acknowledgment data packet, the sending device determines whether a communication error occurred based on the receive tracking number and the transmit tracking number.

Method and apparatus for tracking data packets in a packet data

A received signal (310) includes information symbols ('D's') including equidistant symbols that are equidistant from the origin of a complex plane. The D's and corresponding interference signals ('I's') are formed (403) and the quantity of equidistant symbols determined (407). A desired signal portion average is based (409) on the received signal. When the quantity of equidistant symbols exceeds a threshold, an undesired signal portion average is based (413) exclusively on the I's corresponding to the equidistant symbols. Otherwise, the undesired signal portion average is based (423) on the I's corresponding to all received D's, including the equidistant symbols. A received signal quality value is then based on a ratio of the desired signal portion average and the undesired signal portion average.

Method for a receiver unit to determine a quality value for a received

In a communication system, a method comprises the steps of receiving (401) at least one information bundle intended for subsequent outbound transmission, receiving (403) at least one reservation request that corresponds to at least one information bundle intended for subsequent inbound transmission, and selecting (407) from amongst the at least one information bundle and the at least one reservation request to provide at least one selected information bundle to be transmitted. At least a part of a communication resource is assigned (409) to support transmission of the at least one selected information bundle.

Method of communication resource assignment

A packet data communication system (100) employs a method and apparatus for conveying data packets in the packet data communication system. A first communication device (101) transmits, at a first time, a first group of data packets and, at a second time prior to receiving an acknowledgment of receipt of the first group, a second group of data packets to a second communication device (105). Each data packet of the two groups includes a respective packet sequence number and the second group includes at least some data packets of the first group. The first communication device stores in memory the packet sequence numbers of the data packets in each group together with a group identifier for their respective group. Upon receiving the first group, the second group, or both, the second communication device transmits an acknowledgment of receipt of at least one of the groups, wherein the acknowledgment includes at least a receive tracking number. Upon receiving the acknowledgment, the first communication device determines which group of data packets the received acknowledgment corresponds to based at least on the receive tracking number. The first communication device then transmits a third group of data packets to the second communication device based on which group the acknowledgment corresponds to.

Method and apparatus for conveying data packets in a packet data

A first communication system (110) is provided with information on communication channels of a second communication system (130), such that these channels can be monitored to determine the likelihood of interference between the systems (110, 130). Based on the monitoring of these channels, a predetermined action is taken with respect to transmission of signal within the first communication system (110) to reduce the likelihood of interference between the systems (110, 130).

Method and apparatus for reducing interference among communication

A diversity receiver that receives diverse modulated signals may produce a usable signal from the received modulated signals in the following manner. Two modulated signals, each including a desired component and an undesired component, are received by the diversity receiver, wherein each desired component includes an originally transmitted signal and each undesired component includes noise and interference. The diversity receiver estimates each desired and undesired component and produces the usable signal based on the estimated desired components and the estimated undesired components.
