A system includes a first electrode at a tip of a tunneling tool and a second electrode. The system includes a circuit configured to determine whether the tip of the tunneling tool is within subcutaneous fat tissue or muscle tissue of a patient based on a measurement of an impedance between the first electrode and the second electrode.

Impedance guided tunneling tool

An implantable medical device is provided for sensing cardiac activity within a patient's body. The device comprises a canister, control circuitry disposed within the canister, and a lead assembly extending from the canister. At least one sense electrode is coupled to the circuitry and disposed on the lead assembly for sensing cardiac activity. At least one spacer is coupled between the lead assembly and the canister for maintaining a minimum predetermined distance between the at least one sense electrode and the canister.

Implantable medical device

A lead including one or more electrodes having circuitry associated therewith. Each such electrode includes a circuit extending along and conforming to at least a portion of an inner surface of the electrode. The circuit includes an isolation substrate contacting at least a portion of the inner surface of the cylindrical electrode portion, a first contact electrically isolated from the electrode portion by the isolation substrate and an integrated circuit electrically coupled to the first contact and the electrode.

Lead apparatus

An implantable medical device system includes a medical electrical lead having a connector assembly and a connector bore for receiving the lead connector assembly. The lead includes a distal portion having a first outer diameter and a distal sealing member, an intermediate portion having a second outer diameter smaller than the first outer diameter, and a connector pin extending from the intermediate portion, the connector pin having an outer diameter corresponding to a DF-1 standard.

Bipolar lead containing HV and LV signal capability

An implantable medical device and method are provided for determining if a patient is in a substantially horizontal position and delaying a programmed cardioversion/defibrillation shock therapy in response to determining the patient is in a substantially horizontal position. In various embodiments, the shock therapy may be delayed by adjusting tachycardia detection criteria or scheduling the shock therapy after a maximum tachycardia episode duration.

Method and apparatus for controlling arrhythmia detection and treatment based on patient posture

A medical device that includes a lead having a lead body extending from a proximal end to a distal end, and a housing having a connector block for receiving the proximal end of the lead body. A fixation mechanism is positioned proximal to an electrode coil located at the distal end of the lead body, and a fixation member or a plurality of fixation members extend from the fixation mechanism from a fixation member proximal end to a fixation member distal end. The fixation members are advanceable from a first position corresponding to the fixation member distal end being positioned along the lead during subcutaneous placement of the lead, to a second position corresponding to the fixation member distal end being positioned away from the lead to fixedly engage the lead at a target site.

Subcutaneous lead fixation mechanisms

A subcutaneous implantable device is provided that includes a defibrillation electrode disposed along a portion of a lead, and a lead tip connected to the lead. The lead tip includes a trailing end coupled to a distal end of the lead, and first and second non-parallel sides extending from the trailing end that converge to a leading end that is configured to wedge between tissue layers as the lead is advanced subcutaneously.

Subcutaneous implantable lead

The invention is directed to medical leads for use with implantable medical devices. Various features of medical leads are described, many of which may be useful in a variety of different leads, e.g., used in a variety of different applications. In one embodiment, the invention provides a medical lead of varying stiffness characteristics. In another embodiment, the invention provides a medical lead having a semi-conical shaped distal tip that becomes wider at more distal tip locations. In either case, described lead features may be particularly useful for J-shaped lead configurations used for implantation in a patient's right atrium. Many other types of leads, however, could also benefit from various aspects of the invention.

Implantable medical lead designs

A subcutaneously implantable lead includes a coil disposed along a portion of the lead, and a lead tip coupled to a distal end of the lead. The lead tip includes at least one component that is movable relative to the distal end of the lead and configured to anchor the lead tip in subcutaneous tissue.

A fixation device for a subcutaneous implantable medical device includes a deformable tip portion that reduces in width when coupled with a fixation tool such that implantation of the implantable medical device through tissue is facilitated. Upon release from the fixation tool, the fixation device returns to its initial shape and stably secures the position of the implantable medical device.

A floating adapter is configured to electrically couple an auxiliary lead assembly to an implantable medical device including a canister. The floating adapter comprises a connector configured to receive an end of the auxiliary lead assembly, and a conductor having a proximal end and a distal end. The distal end of the conductor is coupled to the connector, and the proximal end of the conductor is coupled to a collector. The collector, the connector, and the conductor form a current flow path between the canister and the auxiliary lead assembly when the conductive body is implanted proximate the canister.

A medical electrical system includes a device including a connector port and an external electrically active surface and an auxiliary lead including a supplemental electrode and a connector end. The external electrically active surface of the device is adapted to receive the auxiliary lead connector end, thereby electrically coupling the supplemental electrode to the device via contact between the connector end and the external surface.

Means for augmenting medical electrical systems

Methods of implanting at least one lead for a cardio defibrillator using body surface potential (BSP) electrodes are disclosed. The methods may include installing defibrillation electrodes in a patient, attaching at least three BSP electrodes to the patient's skin, creating a potential difference between the defibrillation electrodes, and measuring the resulting body surface potential at the three BSP electrodes. Once the resulting BSP is measured, the methods may include determining the amplitude of a resultant vector formed by the measured BSP potential differences. The location of a defibrillation electrode may then be manipulated to increase the amplitude of the resultant vector formed by the measured BSP potential differences.

Implantation of medical device with measurement of body surface potential

The invention is directed to techniques for electrode placement around a heart. A harness having one or more attachment sites may be secured around the heart, and electrodes may be secured at the attachment sites as desired by the physician for the patient. The electrodes may be, for example, pacing and sensing electrodes, defibrillation electrodes, or any combination thereof. The harness holds the electrodes in place and also impedes the progress of ventricular dilation. The electrodes attached to the harness may be used for any of several purposes, such as cardiac resynchronization, selective defibrillation, measurement of impedance, pacing and cardioversion.
