A device for multiple row addressing is driven with pulse patterns based on sets of 8 (or more) orthogonal functions which have a less varying frequency content than pulse patterns based on a set of 8 Walsh functions. Mutually orthogonal signals are obtained from at least two types of the orthogonal functions having four elementary units of time. Within the four elementary units of time, one pulse each unit of time has a polarity which is different from the plurality of the other pulses.

Display device

Digital to analogue conversion in an AMLCD is obtained by using the column electrode capacitance as part of the digital to analogue conversion circuit by dividing columns () into separate sections and serially performing the conversion via switching elements (). Alternative embodiments comprise a column driver circuit with capacitors having a (binary) divided range of capacitance or use column sub-electrodes of different widths.

Matrix display devices

A device for multiple row addressing is driven by frame addressing with pulse patterns based on sets of orthogonal functions. By choosing redundant frames with suitable frame lengths, a less varying frequency content is obtained than with pulse patterns obtained via frames based on a set of binary functions.

In flexible AM-LCDs using plastic TFT transistors ( ), based on bottom gate, the signal distortion on the data lines ( ) or selection lines ( ) is reduced by adding metal strips ( ) per pixel, attached to said data lines (by vertical interconnections ( )), to provide a low-ohmic shunt.

A flat display device, preferably of the PALC type, in which the plasma channels are formed by etching laterally-spaced slots in a spacer plate, attaching a thin dielectric sheet over the etched spacer plate, and bonding the etched spacer plate to a transparent substrate such that each channel is formed by the portion of the substrate between flanking walls formed by the etched slots in the spacer plate, adjacent flanking walls in the spacer plate, and the overlying portion of the thin dielectric sheet. In a modification, strengthening crossbars are formed between adjacent flanking walls.

Plasma addressed liquid crystal display with glass spacers

A flat display device, preferably of the PALC type, in which the plasma channels are formed by etching laterally-spaced slots in a spacer plate, attaching a thin dielectric sheet over the etched spacer plate, and bonding the etched spacer plate to a transparent substrate such that each channel is formed by the portion of the substrate between flanking walls formed by the etched slots in the spacer plate, adjacent flanking walls in the spacer plate, and the overlying portion of the thin dielectric sheet. By positioning the flanking walls between channel electrode pairs, thus providing glass-to-glass interfaces, anodic bonding can be employed to assemble the three channel elements. Etching can be simplified by pre-attaching the unetched channel plate to the substrate or thin dielectric cover sheet with an intervening etch stop, and etching in situ using the-etch stop to prevent etching of the substrate or thin dielectric cover sheet. In a modification, the thin dielectric cover sheet as a separate element is substituted by depositing a continuous layer or multi-layers including an etch stop on the unetched spacer plate so that, following the etching, the deposited layer or multi-layer remains as the thin channel cover.

Plasma addressed liquid crystal display with etched glass spacers

A display device having a first substrate with row electrodes and a second substrate with column electrodes define pixels of a light-modulating cell. An electro-optical layer is capable of assuming a plurality of states with at least two states of which are stable in the absence of an electric field. The display device further has drive means for driving the row electrodes with selection signals and for driving the column electrodes with data signals in conformity with an image to be displayed. The first and second substrates are spaced such that the light-modulating cell has a thickness at least two times the pitch P of the electro-optical material. In the operating state, the drive means sequentially provide groups of p row electrodes (p>1) with mutually orthogonal signals during a selection period.

Display device in which switching elements (5) are realized in an organic semiconductor layer. Mutual insulation of the elements and pixels is obtained either electrically by applying depletion via voltages to a guard line (4) or physically by making parts of the organic semiconductor layer insulating.

Passive display driven by means of multiple-row addressing, in which the drive voltages are decreased by an optimum choice of the number of orthogonal signals.

An electronic array of data elements, in particular, a flat display device preferably of the PALC type in which the plasma channels are defined by walls of an organic material, preferably a polyimide material. A protective layer is provided over the polyimide walls to prevent deterioration. Spaced electrode portions are preferably provided on facing surfaces of the walls. The preferred method is to lay down a thick layer of polyimide material and a thin resist over the polyimide layer, pattern the resist, and then use the resist to pattern the polyimide layer in the shape of the desired walls. The walls are then covered with a thin dielectric sheet-like member to form the plasma channels.

Plasma addressed liquid crystal display with organic-walled plasma channels

A flat display device preferably of the PALC type in which the plasma channels are formed by depositing successive layers of electrically conductive and electrically insulating material on a substrate containing spaced walls of a resist material that are preferably structured with a negative slope to form in the space between the resist walls flanking channel walls comprising an electrode layer and rising above it a wall of insulating material with the electrode layer sides exposed to adjacent channels. Subsequently, the resist walls are removed by a lift-off process removing with it the layer deposits on the resist walls leaving behind the layer deposits between the resist walls. The remaining insulating walls are then covered with thin dielectric sheet-like member to form the plasma channels.

Control device for an electroluminescent display device, comprising an active layer of a semiconducting polymer of, for example pixels arranged in the form of a matrix, reducing flicker and crosstalk. The control device may be based on voltage control at which voltages across the pixels are at least 1.6 V, but is preferably based on current control, at which the duration of the data pulses determines the grey level.

A process for fabricating the channel substrate of a plasma-addressed electro-optic display device comprising a layer of electro-optic material, data electrodes coupled to the electro-optic layer and adapted to receive data voltages for activating portions of the electro-optic layer, and a plurality of plasma channels extending generally transverse to the data electrodes for selectively switching on said electro-optic portions and closed off by a thin dielectric sheet, typically a thin glass sheet. The channel substrate is fabricated using anodic bonding to attach the thin glass sheet to an etched or walled preferably glass substrate containing the channels. This reduces stresses in the thin glass sheet. Reduced stress allows post processing of the thin sheet, particularly further etching to reduce its thickness.
