In various embodiments, a sketching application generates models of three-dimensional (3D) objects. In operation, the sketching application generates a first virtual geometry based on a first free-form gesture. Subsequently, the sketching application generates a second virtual geometry based on a first constrained gesture associated with a two-dimensional (2D) physical surface. The sketching application then generates a model of a 3D object based on the first virtual geometry and the second virtual geometry. Advantageously, because the sketching application generates virtual geometries based on a combination of free-form and constrained gestures, the sketching application efficiently generates accurate models of detailed 3D objects.

Computer-aided techniques for designing detailed three-dimensional objects

Methods for characterizing two-dimensional concept drawings are disclosed. The concept drawings comprise cross-sections intersecting at cross-hairs. The method comprises: determining, for each cross-section: a plane on which the cross-section is located, the plane having a normal vector in a three-dimensional coordinate system; and, for each cross-hair on the cross-section, a tangent vector in the three-dimensional coordinate system which is tangent to the cross-section at the cross-hair. For each cross-hair comprising iand jintersecting cross-sections, one or more constraints are satisfied, the constraints comprising: the normal vector nof the plane on which the icross-section is located is at least approximately orthogonal to the normal vector nof the plane on which the jcross-section is located; and the tangent vector tto the icross-section at the cross-hair is at least approximately orthogonal to the tangent vector tto the jcross-section at the cross-hair.

Methods and systems for characterizing concept drawings and estimating three-dimensional information therefrom

Complex labyrinth curves are interactively generated by an iterative process that spatially modulates curve evolution by an image or other function defined on the evolution space. After curves and evolution parameters are initialized [], the iterative process allows the curve and evolution parameters to be interactively modified by a user [], resamples the curves [], and spatially modulates the curves according to the evolution parameters []. The evolved labyrinth curves are may be processed [] for use in various applications including animation, maze creation, intricate artistic patterns, and graphical user interfaces that map linearly ordered data to the evolved curve and allow the data to be navigated using the rendered curve. The evolved curves can also be triangulated and projected to a plane to create patterns for manufacturing developable surfaces.
