The performance of a switch or other network device is improved by adjusting the number of idle bytes transmitted between data units—that is, the size of the interpacket gap—to increase the bandwidth of a network interface. In some embodiments, the adjustments may be made in a manner designed to compensate for potential mismatches between the clock rate of the network interface and clock rates of interfaces of other network devices when retransmitting data received from those other network devices. In yet other embodiments, the adjustments may be designed to increase available bandwidth for other purposes. In an embodiment, the idle reduction logic is in a Media Access Control ('MAC') layer of a network interface. The idle reduction logic may be enabled or disabled based on user preference, or programmatically based on factors such as a transmission utilization level for the MAC layer, buffer fill level, and so forth.

Handling interface clock rate mismatches between network devices

A network devices includes multiple components including respective clocks that are synchronized with a global time. Each component includes one or more sensors and/or error detection circuitry that generate telemetry data. Each component associates the telemetry data with the global time, which enables time-correlation of telemetry data from the different components within the network device and/or from other network devices that also generate telemetry data associated with the global time.

Time aware link-level telemetry

A computerized system and method for managing a passive optical network (PON) are disclosed. The system includes a detection and analysis module adapted for receiving uploaded measurement data from an optical line terminal (OLT) and at least one optical network terminal (ONT), and at least one of technical tools data, service failure data, and outside plant data. The detection and analysis module is adapted for determining a source of failure or potential failure in the PON by correlating the uploaded measurement data and the at least one of technical tools data and service failure data with information stored in a memory medium for the OLT and each ONT.

Management system for GPON based services

Approaches, techniques, and mechanisms are disclosed for monitoring and reporting status information in a computing device. According to one embodiment, status messages are generated with respect to a subsystem of a computing system, such as a computer chip configured to perform network switching and routing functions in a network device. The status messages convey status information, such as configuration and/or operational states, metrics, or other statistics. A message decoder within the system may be configured to receive and analyze the status messages. Based thereon, the message decoder generates output data in a specific format that controls an output device, such as an LED array. The message decoder then sends the output data to the output device. Enabling the reporting of status information through LED indicators and other typically custom and proprietary output devices is thus greatly simplified. A status chain for collecting and reporting status information is also described.

Hardware-assisted monitoring and reporting

A method includes receiving, at a processor of a network device, data packets to be communicated to a multicast destination. The method includes recording, with the network device, performance data associated with the data packets, where the performance data is associated with a performance metric. The method includes determining, with the processor, a trend based on the performance data. The method also includes sending a warning from the processor to a performance server based on the trend satisfying a condition.

System and method of monitoring video data packet delivery

A computerized system and method for managing a passive optical network (PON) is disclosed. The system includes a detection and analysis module adapted for receiving uploaded measurement data from an optical line terminal (OLT) and at least one optical network terminal (ONT), and at least one of technical tools data, service failure data, and outside plant data. Systems and methods of monitoring packet delivery are disclosed. In an embodiment, a method is disclosed that includes querying multiple network devices for performance metrics corresponding to video data packets sent from a video server. The network devices may include multicast branching points between the video server and the destination. A delivery failure may be identified based on the performance metrics, and a response to the delivery failure may be initiated.

Methods and apparatus to test a subscriber line for a broadband access service are disclosed. An example network interface device (NID) comprises a tone generator to transmit a tone on a subscriber line to characterize the subscriber line while a DSL modem is providing a DSL service via the subscriber line, the tone having a frequency occurring within a range of frequencies in use by the DSL modem to provide the DSL service, and a pair of terminals to couple the DSL modem and the tone generator to the subscriber line.

Methods and apparatus to test a subscriber line for a broadband access service

Dynamic remote management of consumer premise devices comprising femtocells integrated into broadband gateways is facilitated. A communication network platform is associated with a consumer premise device(s) and can include a remote management component that facilitates dynamic and remote management of consumer premise devices in a wireless communication network. The remote management component monitors and measures desired parameters respectively associated with a consumer premise devices and employs remote controls to remotely adjust parameters based on predetermined optimization criteria. The remote management component calculates channel capacity based on measured channel signal-to-noise ratio to facilitate determining whether to hand off a current cell to another cell, wherein at least one cell is associated with a consumer premise device. The remote management component can generate and store Quality of Service profiles respectively associated with the consumer premise devices to facilitate remote management of the consumer premise devices.
