A shaped article including a modified ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (C), wherein the modified ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (C) is a product obtained by modifying an unmodified ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (A) with an epoxy compound (B) having a double bond and has a degree of modification with the epoxy compound (B) of 0.1 to 10 mol % based on the monomer units of the ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (A), and at least a part of the modified ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (C) is crosslinked, and the gel fraction of the shaped article is 3% by weight or more. Thereby, a shaped article which contains almost no harmful crosslinking agent and which is excellent in hot water resistance, heat resistance and a gas barrier property is provided.

The ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer resin which contains an alkali metal salt (A) and has a very low extractable carboxylate content is obtained by a method including contacting the ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer resin with an aqueous solution containing carbon dioxide gas.

Providing a crosslinkable composition and a crosslinking agent is objected to, which are capable forming a crosslinked product that is superior in retort resistance, with suppressed bleeding out from the crosslinked product, and that has favorable interlayer adhesiveness when formed into a multilayered structure crosslinked product. The present invention provides a crosslinkable composition containing (A) a polymer having an SP value of no less than 9.5 (cal/cm)and no greater than 16.5 (cal/cm), and (B) a crosslinking agent having one or more polar groups that include an oxygen atom and a nitrogen atom not constituting an aromatic ring, and two or more polymerizable groups. The difference between the SP value of the polymer (A) and the SP value of the crosslinking agent (B) is preferably no greater than 2 (cal/cm), and more preferably no greater than 1 (cal/cm). A decomposition temperature of the crosslinking agent (B) is preferably no less than 240&#xb0; C., and a melting point of the crosslinking agent (B) is preferably no greater than 220&#xb0; C.

Provided is a modified ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (C) having an ethylen content of 5 to 55 mol %, which contains a specific structural unit (I) in an amount of 0.3 to 40 mol % and may be obtained by reacting an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (A) with a monofunctional epoxy compound (B) having a molecular weight of not more than 500. This can be produced by a method for producing the modified ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (C) which comprises melting and kneading an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (A) with a monofunctional epoxy compound (B) in an extruder. The modified ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (C) is superior to a unmodified ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (A) in transparency, stretchability, flexibility and flexing resistance due to the specific structural unit (I) incorporated therein, and thus, can be used as a barrier material in various applications requiring the above performance capabilities.

A multilayer structure having a layer of an adhesive resin composition (A) and a layer of another resin (B), wherein the adhesive resin composition (A) includes a thermoplastic resin (a1) containing functional groups of at least one kind selected from the group consisting of a boronic acid group and boron-containing groups capable of being converted into a boronic acid group in the presence of water, and a polyolefin (a2) which does not contain the functional groups, the blending weight ratio (a1/a2) of the thermoplastic resin (a1) to the polyolefin (a2) is 1/99 to 15/85, and particles of the thermoplastic resin (a1) are dispersed with an average particle diameter of 0.1 to 1.2 &#x3bc;m in a matrix of the polyolefin (a2). Consequently, a multilayer structures having satisfactory interlayer adhesion strength can be provided even if the content of the resin having a special functional group in the adhesive resin composition layer is reduced.

The present invention provides a process for producing pellet of EVOH comprising the steps of introducing an EVOH solution containing alcohol into an apparatus, contacting the solution with water in the apparatus to let out the alcohol with water and then letting out an EVOH hydrous composition from the above-mentioned apparatus (step 1); cutting the EVOH hydrous composition let out therefrom to obtain EVOH hydrous composition pellets (step 2); introducing the obtained EVOH hydrous composition pellets into a dryer to reduce a water content thereof (step 3); melt-kneading the pellets, whose water content is reduced, in an extruder (step 4); and cutting EVOH discharged from the extruder to obtain the pellet of EVOH (step 5). Thus, the EVOH hydrous composition obtained by removing alcohol without deteriorating the environment can be efficiently dried, and pellets having less thermal degradation in drying and a uniform shape can be obtained.

A method for producing an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer resin composition, wherein an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer resin is contacted with an aqueous solution containing both carbon dioxide gas and at least one additive selected from the group consisting of an alkali metal salt (A) and a boron compound (B). The present invention can provide an environmentally friendly method for producing an EVOH resin composition, the method releasing no carboxylic acid such as acetic acid to the ambient atmosphere. The present invention provides a resin composition which comprises EVOH and a thermoplastic resin other than EVOH and which generates less odor and therefore is suitable for food packaging applications. The invention also provides an environmentally friendly method for producing a resin composition, without releasing any carboxylic acid such as acetic acid to the peripheral environment. A resin composition containing less carboxylate group is obtained by contacting an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer resin with an aqueous solution containing both carbon dioxide gas and at least one additive selected from the group consisting of an alkali metal salt (A) and a boron compound (B) and then melt kneading with a thermoplastic resin (G) other than EVOH.
