In one embodiment, a magnetic head includes a lower magnetic shield layer positioned at a media-facing surface, a pinned layer positioned above the lower magnetic shield layer at the media-facing surface, at least two MR elements extending in an element height direction by a first length positioned above the pinned layer and separated in a cross-track direction by an inner layer, bias layers extending in the element height direction by a second length positioned on outside edges of the MR elements and the pinned layer, and current paths positioned above and in electrical communication with the bias layers on either side of the inner layer, each current path extending in the element height direction away from the media-facing surface by a third length.

In one embodiment, a magnetic head includes a main pole adapted for producing a writing magnetic field, a trailing shield positioned on a trailing side of the main pole, wherein a trailing gap is positioned between the trailing shield and the main pole, and a side shield positioned on at least one side of the main pole in a cross-track direction, wherein a side gap is positioned between the side shield and the main pole, wherein the main pole has an asymmetrical shape at an air bearing surface (ABS) thereof. A magnetic write head having a main magnetic write pole and a magnetic sub-pole that are configured to maximize magnetic performance. The main magnetic write pole has a flared portion located near the air bearing surface and a non-flared portion removed from the air bearing surface. A magnetic sub-pole is formed adjacent to the main magnetic write pole and terminates at a front endpoint that is recessed from the air bearing surface but is closer to the air bearing surface than the non-flared portion.

In one embodiment, a perpendicular magnetic head includes a main magnetic pole, a side shield disposed on both sides of the main magnetic pole in a track width direction, the side shield including a material having a saturation magnetic flux density of no greater than about 1.0 T, and a trailing shield disposed on a trailing side of the main magnetic pole, wherein the trailing shield and the side shield are physically separated from one another. In another embodiment, the side shield includes a first magnetic film, and the trailing shield includes a second magnetic film, wherein a magnetic permeability of the first magnetic film is lower than a magnetic permeability of the second magnetic film.

According to one embodiment, a magnetic head includes an upper magnetic shield, a lower magnetic shield, a magnetoresistive element having a magnetization-free layer formed therein formed between the shields, an upper magnetic shield restricting part formed on a medium facing surface side, a lower magnetic shield restricting part formed on the medium facing surface side, and a non-magnetic part formed between the upper and lower magnetic shield restricting parts on the medium facing surface side such that the magnetoresistive element is not exposed at the medium facing surface. The non-magnetic part is positioned such that a distance between the upper and lower magnetic shield restricting parts in a direction perpendicular to a plane of deposition is smaller than a distance between the upper and lower magnetic shields in the direction perpendicular to the plane of deposition near the medium facing surface. According to one embodiment, a perpendicular magnetic recording head includes a main pole, wherein a thickness in a down-track direction of the main pole increases moving away from an air bearing surface of the magnetic pole, and wherein a center position in a thickness direction of a portion of the main pole which is exposed at the air bearing surface (the ABS portion) is positioned toward a trailing side of the main pole with respect to a center position in a thickness direction of a portion of the magnetic pole having a greatest cross-sectional area and which is set back from the air bearing surface (the set-back portion). Further embodiments of this magnetic recording head, along with systems thereof and methods of producing magnetic recording heads are also described, according to more embodiments.

Perpendicular magnetic recording head and method for producing the same

A read sensor is disposed near a main pole, thereby reducing the distance between the read sensor and a write sensor. In this case, however, a magnetic field generated from the main pole affects magnetization of a free layer and a pinned layer of a magnetoresistive film, thereby causing the magnetizing directions to rotate, a magnetic barrier to be generated, and the read property to be degraded. According to the present invention, a main pole and a yoke configure a magnetic circuit together with a sub-pole and a soft magnetic under layer of the magnetic disk and an exciting coil magnetizes the magnetic circuit, thereby a recording magnetic field is applied to a recording layer to record information bits on the layer. And in order to sharpen the magnetic field distribution generated by the main pole, a trailing shield made of a ferromagnetic material is disposed at the trailing side of the main pole adjacently. And a read sensor (magnetoresistive element) for reading bit information is provided between the trailing shield and the main pole.

Embodiments of the invention provide a magnetic head which assures an improved format efficiency without increase in the magnetic field intensity applied at a read element. In one embodiment, a magnetic head incorporates a write head having a main pole and an auxiliary pole, and a read head having a read element between reader shields. An auxiliary shield as a magnetic body is provided between the main pole and reader shields or on the opposite side of the main pole with the reader shields between the main pole and the auxiliary shield.

Embodiments of the invention provide a magnetic head which prevents data on a recording medium from being erased even when a stray field is applied. In one embodiment, an auxiliary pole is sandwiched between a stray-field shield composed of a magnetic layer recessed from the air bearing surface and a main pole. The stray-field shield may be formed on the leading side of the auxiliary pole. A face of the stray-field shield on a medium side may be recessed from an air-bearing-surface of the magnetic head.

The present invention is directed to carrying out a high density magnetic recording to a material having a large coercive force by perpendicular magnetic recording head. By giving a patterning onto a soft magnetic under layer of a perpendicular two-layer recording media in sync with a period of a recording bit, a magnetic field from a write head can be allowed to converge to a soft magnetic column. Therefore, a magnetization reversal of the magnetic recording media material having a large anisotropic constant becomes possible, and then a high density magnetic recording can be achieved.

The present invention is directed to-carrying out a high density magnetic recording to a material having a large coercive force by perpendicular magnetic recording head. The invention fabricates a perpendicular recording head eliminating influence of external magnetic field and provides a magnetic disk drive having high stability by using the magnetic recording head and constructs a structure in which shield against external magnetic field is formed from a main pole via a gap layer and an edge portion thereof is recessed from a surface against a medium. By providing the shield against the external magnetic field, the influence of the external magnetic field is restrained and by recessing the edge from the surface against the medium, leakage of magnetic field from the shield against the external magnetic field to the medium is prevented to thereby prevent a magnetization signal from being erased.
