A method by a telematics device for identifying an asset platform for an asset coupled to the telematics device is provided. The asset has a multi-interface port and the telematics device determines the asset platform based on matching tags on both a primary interface and a secondary interface. Identifying the asset platform aids in obtaining asset data and avoiding operational interference.

The method includes detecting a vehicle starting event and sending a first plurality of parameter requests while refraining from sending a second plurality of parameter requests for a requests-off duration after the vehicle starting event. In response to detecting a vehicle turning off event, sending a third plurality of parameter requests before the expiry of a post vehicle turning off duration.

Methods and systems of enabling a non-interfering mode in a telematics device are provided. The method may be used to prevent interference between a telematics device and a diagnostic tool connected to the same vehicle communications bus. When a diagnostic tool is detected, the telematics device enables a non-interfering mode. Advantageously, the operation of diagnostic tools such as emissions testing diagnostic tools, is not disrupted.
