Catalysts producing a sharply peaked alkoxylation distribution during the alkoxylation of organic materials comprise mixtures of BF.sub.3 and metal alkyls or metal alkoxides, SiF.sub.4 and metal alkyls or metal alkoxides, or mixtures of these catalysts.

Catalysts for alkoxylation reactions

This invention relates to secondary or tertiary recovery processes for the recovery of oil from subterranean oil-bearing reservoirs. More particularly, this invention relates to an improved method for the recovery of petroleum from underground reservoirs, which petroleum contains sulfonate surfactants and water and for a method of removing said sulfonate surfactants and water from petroleum produced from said recovery processes.

Use of high ethoxylate low carbon atom amines for simultaneous removal

Catalysts and a method of using said catalysts for the alkoxylation of a variety of materials is disclosed. Catalysts so described produce alkoxylates having a very sharp alkoxylate distribution. The catalysts are supported and unsupported dialkoxy and dialkyl metal fluorides and halides and alkyl metal difluorides and dihalides.

An adsorbent is provided for removing color precursors from detergent range alkyl benzene prior to sulfonation. The adsorbent provided is a bauxite clay having at least one material selected from the group consisting of ferric oxide, titanium dioxide, and zirconium oxide and which contain from about 0.1 to about 20 percent by weight of sulfuric acid, said bauxite clay then being calcined at a temperature and time sufficient to activate the adsorbent prior to use.

Color precursor removal from detergent alkyl benzenes

Extremely effective adsorbants are provided for removing color precursors from detergent range alkyl benzenes prior to sulfonation. The adsorbers provided are specific crystalline zeolites in a silica alumina matrix and bauxite clay having at least one material selected from the group consisting of ferric oxide, titanium dioxide and zirconium oxide which is activated by sulfuric acid then calcined to provide the effective adsorbant.

Color precursor removal from detergent range alkyl benzenes

Color may be removed from colored polyphenylated alkane by contacting this material with certain adsorbants. The adsorbants provided comprise certain crystalline zeolites in a silica alumina matrix and bauxite clay having at least one material selected from the group consisting of ferric oxide, titanium oxide, and zirconium oxide, which is activated by sulfuric acid and then calcined to provide the effective adsorbant.

Removing color from polyphenylated alkane

Cresylic acid ethoxylation is catalyzed by basic compounds and salts of alkaline earth metals. Ethoxylates from such reactions have narrow ethylene oxide distributions, lower pour points and lower by-products as compared to alkali base catalyzed ethoxylation. Suitable catalysts include strontium-containing and barium-containing materials. The catalyst also includes co-catalyst combinations using these materials with one or more promoters including polyols, amines, amides, carboxylic acids and phenols. The co-catalyst combinations can be preformed prior to introduction into the reaction mixture.

Alkoxylation of cresylic acids

Basic compounds of Ba and Sr used in the production of peaked alcohol alkoxylates can be removed from the products by precipitating with some polybasic organic acids. Examples of effective acids include glutaric, diglycolic, adipic, and azelaic acids.

Catalyst removal from alcohol alkoxylates

Strontium-containing materials catalyze the alkoxylation of alcohols. Strontium produced alkoxylates have sharper alkoxylate distributions, lower free alcohols, lower pour points, and better detergency than alkoxylates obtained from alkali base catalysis.

Strontium catalyzed alkoxylations

Strontium and barium-based catalyzed alkoxylation of alcohols of all classes is carried out more rapidly and produces a more peaked reaction product when carried out in the presence of co-catalysts such as calcium oxide, calcium carbide, calcium hydroxide, magnesium metal, magnesium hydroxides, zinc oxide, and aluminum metal.

Inorganic catalyst for alkoxylation of alcohols

Dioxane impurities in ether sulfates are removed by using a novel steam stripping technique in which water is neither added to nor removed from ether sulfate. This is possible because the chemical potential of water in the vapor phase is kept at the same value as that of water in the solution phase. In this way, thickening and foaming are avoided while dioxane levels can be reduced to below 10 parts per million by weight in a single pass.
