The compound (1) having 2,3-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1,4-phenylene is stable chemically and has excellent miscibility with other liquid crystal compounds, large and negative dielectric anisotropy and proper optical anisotropy. A liquid crystal composition comprising the compound has large specific resistance and a large voltage holding ratio, and that the composition is useful for a liquid crystal display element. A ferroelectric liquid crystal composition exhibiting a novel chiral smectic phase is disclosed. In this novel phase, a director of liquid crystal molecules may settle in a third stable state which is distinguished from known bistable states of liquid crystal molecules in a ferroelectric chiral smectic C phase. By using this composition in a display element, a dichromatic display having a quick response can be provided on a third-colored display ground by applying a controlled electric field across the composition.

By combining a host liquid crystal composition composed mainly of a halogenated benzene derivative and having a high voltage-holding ratio of .DELTA..di-elect cons. of 4.5 to 7.5, with a dichroic pigment having a specified, molecular structure, there is exhibited an effectiveness that it is possible to obtain a guest-host liquid crystal active matrix display element of 3.3V drive having stability under high temperature.

A ferroelectric liquid crystal composition having a SC* phase and a light-switching element using the composition are provided, which composition comprises the following components, A, B and C, each in a specified proportion: Component A has the formula ##STR1## wherein ##STR2## R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are same or different linear or branched alkyl, alkoxy or alkanoyloxy of 1-18C, X is H, halogen or CN, l, m and n are 0 or 1 and (l+m+n) is 1 or 2, and has smectic C phase; Component B has the formula ##STR3## wherein ##STR4## Y is H, halogen or CN, k is 0 or 1, R.sup.3 is linear or branched alkyl or alkoxy of 1-18C, and * is asymmetric C, and consists of optically active compounds having the same senses of Ps in SC* phase induced when dissolved in smectic C liquid crystal, to one another; and Component C has the formula ##STR5## wherein ##STR6## Z is H, halogen or CN, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 are same or different linear or branched alkyl or alkoxy of 1-18C R.sup.4 is 12-18C alkyl or 1-18C linear or branched alkoxy, and * is asymmetric C, and is an optically active compound having the same sense of Ps in SC* phase induced when dissolved in smectic C liquid crystal as that of the compound of component B.

A novel optically active liquid crystal compound and a liquid crystal composition containing the same are provided, which compound is expressed by the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is alkyl or alkoxy of 4-18 C; R.sub.2 is alkyl, alkoxy, acyl or alkoxymethyl of 4-18C; but either one of R.sub.1 or R.sub.2 is an optically active group; either one of X.sub.1 or X.sub.2 is halogen atom and the other is H; m and n each are 0 or 1 and m+n is 0 or 1.

A ferroelectric liquid crystal composition is provided exhibiting an Sc* phase over a wide temperature range including room temperature and having a spontaneous polarization value of 30 nC/cm.sup.2 or less and a quick response, time. An optical switching element comprising the ferroelectric liquid crystal composition is also provided. The ferroelectric liquid crystal composition comprises components A, B, C and D in respective amounts by weight of 75 to 95%, 3 to 9%, and 3 to 12% and 2 to 5% based on the total amount of these components and having a phase sequence series of an isotropic liquid, a cholesteric phase, a smectic A phase and a chiral smectic C phase in that order from the high temperature side and a spontaneous polarization value of 30 nC/cm.sup.2 or less. The component A is at least one compound selected from the group consisting of compounds represented by the general formulae: ##STR1## The component B is at least one compound selected from the group consisting of compounds represented by the general formulae: ##STR2## The component C is at least one compound selected from the group consisting of compounds represented by the general formula: ##STR3## In the above formulae, R.sup.1 to R.sup.10, X, m, n and * are as defined in the claims.
