A PDP with superior light-emitting characteristics and color reproduction is achieved by setting the chromaticity coordinate y (the CIE color specification) of light to 0.08 or less, more preferably to 0.07 or less, or 0.06 or less, enabling the color temperature of light to be set to 7,000K or more, and further to 8,000K or more, 9,000K or more, or 10,000K or more. The PDP is manufactured by a method in which the processes for heating the fluorescent substances such as the fluorescent substance baking, sealing material temporary baking, bonding, and exhausting processes are performed in the dry gas atmosphere, or in an atmosphere in which a dry gas is circulated at a pressure lower than the atmospheric pressure. This PDP is also manufactured by: a method in which after the front and back panels are bonded together, the exhausting process for exhausting gas from the inner space between panels is started while the panels are not cooled to room temperature; or a method in which after the front and back panels are temporarily baked, the process for bonding the panels is started while the panels are not cooled to room temperature. This reduces the time and energy required for heating, resulting in reduction of manufacturing cost.

A plasma display panel is provided with a protective layer having a dense growth of columnar crystals formed on a dielectric layer. A middle layer can be provided for improving orientation of the columnar crystals. A heating step creates seed crystals to increase the width and growth of columnar crystals with a selective orientation and greater diameter. The area of any exposed surfaces on the protective layer becomes smaller and absorption of impurities decreases. A layer of grain crystals or an amorphic crystal layer is initially deposited on the dielectric layer to establish wider area seed crystals of a desired orientation. A vacuum evaporated complimentary protective layer can then be grown with the improved configuration.

The present invention intends to provide a manufacturing method for a PDP that can continuously apply phosphor ink for a long time and can accurately and evenly produce phosphor layers even when the cell construction is very fine. To do so, phosphor ink is continuously expelled from a nozzle while the nozzle moves relative to channels between partition walls formed on a plate so as to scan and apply phosphor ink to the channels. While doing so the path taken by the nozzle within each channel between a pair of partition walls is adjusted based on position information for the channel. The phosphor ink is composed of: phosphor particles that have an average particle diameter of 0.5 to 5 &#x3bc;m; a mixed solvent in which materials selected from a group consisting of terpineol, butyl carbitol acetate, butyl carbitol, pentandiol, and limonene are mixed; and a binder that is an ethylene group polymer or ethyl cellulose containing at least 49% of ethoxy group (&#x2014;OCH) cellulose molecules. After dispersion a charge-removing material is added to the phosphor ink.

When a gas discharge panel is driven, a voltage is applied between scan and address electrode groups to perform set-up. The voltage waveform has four intervals. In a first interval, the voltage is raised in a short time (less than 10 &#x3bc;s) to a first voltage, wherein 100 V&#x2266;first voltage&#x3c;starting voltage. Then, in a second interval, the voltage is raised to a second voltage no less than the starting voltage and with an absolute gradient smaller than that for the voltage rise in the first interval (no more than 9 V/&#x3bc;s). Next, in a third interval, the voltage is lowered in a short time (no more than 10 &#x3bc;s) from the second voltage to a third voltage no more than the starting voltage. Following this, in a fourth interval, the voltage is lowered still further (for 100 &#x3bc;s to 250 &#x3bc;s) with a gradient smaller than that for the voltage fall in the third interval. The time occupied by the whole voltage waveform should be no more, than 360 &#x3bc;s. This means that a wall charge can be properly accumulated, allowing stable addressing to be performed even when the pulse applied during the address period is short (no more than 1.5 &#x3bc;s). This lengthens the discharge sustain period and improves luminance.

High resolution and high luminance plasma display panel and drive method for the same

A method for producing a plasma display panel that has a front substrate and a back substrate disposed to face each other. A pre-baking phosphor layer containing a phosphor and an organic binder is formed on at least one of surfaces of the front substrate and the back substrate that are to face each other. A sealing material that softens with heat is applied to the peripheral region of at least one of the surfaces of the front and back substrates that are to face each other. The front and back substrates are disposed to face each other in a stack. A manufacturing method for a plasma display panel applies phosphorous ink from a nozzle to channels between partition walls as the nozzle moves relative to the channels. The phosphorous ink is redispersed with a dispenser before being expelled from the nozzle. Subsequently, a second plate is placed on the partition walls and the first and second plates are sealed together with a gas medium between the two.
