Systems and methods are provided for monitoring transmissions of media content (such as audio and audiovisual content) in order to obtain independent and objective data regarding the use of specific media content recordings or works within the transmissions. Processing and reporting of such data is provided in various ways to serve a variety of business needs. Methods for employing content identification technology to efficiently and automatically obtain reliable, accurate, and precise monitoring data are also disclosed. Various information products and services based on such monitoring systems are proposed.

Media monitoring, management and information system

Methods and devices are provided to thwart analysis of a watermarking system by preventing analysis of watermarks in a host content. Upon receiving a content at a watermark embedding device, the content is analyzed to ascertain whether one or more test features are present in at least a first portion of the received content. When the analysis reveals that one or more test features are present, embedding of watermarks in at least the first portion of the received content is disabled. The test features of interest include a temporal, a spatial and/or a frequency characteristic such that, if a region of the content that includes test feature is embedded with a watermark, at least one characteristic of the embedded watermark is detectable upon analysis of that region. The test feature can, for example, approximate an impulse signal, a step function signal or a pure sinusoidal signal.

Circumvention of watermark analysis in a host content

Methods and devices are provided to embed imperceptible watermarks into a host content and to subsequently extract embedded watermarks in a manner so as to achieve desired levels of robustness, transparency and security. For a particular host content, a first number of embedding opportunities are used to insert watermarks, which is less than a number of all embedding opportunities within the host content. Watermarks are extracted from a first number of watermark extraction opportunities, which is less than a number of all watermark extraction opportunities associated with the host content. The relationship between the first number of embedding opportunities, the first number of watermark extraction opportunities and the number of all watermark extraction opportunities is such that a circumvention attempt that overwrites watermarks at all extraction opportunities degrades perceptual quality of the host content below a desired perceptual quality level.

Asymmetric watermark embedding/extraction

Methods and apparatus for thwarting circumvention of watermark detection are provided. When content is received at a device that is equipped with a watermark extractor, an attacker may disguise the form of the received content in an attempt to circumvent detection of watermarks that are embedded in the content. A signal processing operation is performed on the received content such that the signal processing operation does not significantly degrade the perceptual quality of the content if the content is indeed in the form that is purported to be. The signal processing operation, however, significantly degrades the perceptual quality of the content if the content is in a different form, thereby discouraging the attacker's attempts to thwart watermark detection.

Methods and apparatus for thwarting watermark detection circumvention

Methods and apparatus for enhancing the robustness of watermark extraction from digital host content are provided. Embedded watermarks may be extracted from received digital host content in accordance with a stego key. A first watermark is extracted and a number of errors in the first extracted watermark is assessed. If the number of errors is above a first pre-determined value, at least a second watermark is extracted from the host content. A number of errors in at least the second extracted watermark is assessed. If the number of errors in at least the second extracted watermark is above a second pre-determined value, the extraction results for the extracted watermarks are combined in order to cumulatively assess the validity of the first extracted watermark and at least the second extracted watermark.

Methods and apparatus for enhancing the robustness of watermark extraction from digital host content

A system for determining the amount of processing that has been applied to watermarked signal. A steganographic signal is provided that includes an original signal and an embedded fragile watermark. The fragile watermark is characterized by a low energy and a high redundancy in comparison to a robust watermark. The steganographic signal is communicated over a distribution channel to a decoder. At the decoder, a measure of a presence of the fragile watermark in the acquired steganographic signal is provided, along with an estimate of the fragility profile of the fragile watermark for this particular original signal. Based on these factors, a estimate is made of the amount of processing that the steganographic signal has undergone. This processing can include, for example, A/D and D/A conversions, resampling, band-limiting, perceptual compression/decompression, etc. Optionally, the fragility profile is derived prior to the distribution of the content and communicated by the steganographic signal for recovery by the decoder. Furthermore, a robust watermark may be provided in the steganographic signal that, e.g., designates the presence of the fragile watermark to a decoder.

Method and apparatus for detecting processing stages applied to a signal

Apparatus and methods are provided for embedding or embedding digital data into an analog host or cover signal. A distributed signal feature of the cover signal in a particular domain (time, frequency or space) is calculated and compared with a set of predefined quantization values corresponding to an information symbol to be encoded. The amount of change required to modify the signal feature to the determined target quantization value is calculated and the cover signal is modified accordingly to so change the feature value over a predefined interval. Information symbols are extracted by the opposite process.

Apparatus and method for embedding and extracting information in analog signals using distributed signal features

Apparatus and methods are provided for embedding watermark information into a cover signal, such as an audio signal, video signal, or still image signal, in a manner that prevents the watermark information from being removed without degrading the quality of the cover signal. This is accomplished by subjecting the cover signal to a phase modulation prior to being embedded with the watermark information, wherein the amount or degree of phase modulation is changed at least for each different watermark to be embedded in a particular instance or copy of the cover signal. As such, if two copies of the same cover signal, each containing a different watermark, are averaged or combined in an attempt to obliterate the watermark information, the cover signal will be subjected to phase cancellation, rendering any illicit copy of such signal so derived to be valueless.

Method and apparatus for preventing removal of embedded information in

Apparatus and methods are provided for encoding, storing and decoding auxiliary information on an analog source signal in a way which has minimal impact on the human perception of the source information when the source signal is applied to an appropriate output device, such as a speaker or a display monitor. The autocorrelation function of a host signal is modulated according to the value of an auxiliary information signal by adding a host modifying signal to the host signal. The auxiliary signal is decoded by generating the autocorrelation function of the encoded signal and extracting the auxiliary signal according to well-known signal extraction techniques.

Apparatus and method for encoding and decoding information in analog

A method and apparatus for encoding information symbols onto an analog host signal modifies signal peaks of the host signal to fall within predetermined amplitude bands. A set of symbols is defined wherein each symbol corresponds to a defined number of signal peaks or to a particular value of signal peak within a band. An additional information channel may be created by altering polarity changes of signal peaks in accordance with predetermined polarity sequences to represent a second set of defined symbols.
