An apparatus is provided for processing a wide dynamic range analog signal which comprises multiple components such as a signal with an in-phase component and a quadrature-phase component in for example separate I and Q data channels, wherein each channel has a dynamic range compressor stage and an operator stage which processes the compressed signals. Optionally the apparatus has a dynamic range expander stage following the operator stage. A method according to the invention involves processing I and Q information after first independently compressing the dynamic range of the signal according to a logarithmic transfer characteristic over a frequency range of interest. A mathematical operation through a F(i,q) function (corresponding to the operator stage) is performed on the compressed components, thereby producing normalized components. The operating transfer function F(i,q) cross links the data channels to effect normalization based on amplitude of information in each of the channels. Dynamic range expansion provides expanded components in an expanded domain. The invention is applicable to any analog signal system having a plurality of channels carrying related signal information.

Method and apparatus for processing a multiple-component wide dynamic range signal

Method and apparatus are provided for processing a wide dynamic range analog signal which comprises a compressive nonlinear transfer function responsive to the average amplitude of the signal without feedback along the signal path. The invention employs frequency selective filtering and expansion of the compressed signal. The invention is applicable to any analog signal system having a plurality of channels carrying related signal information.

A method and apparatus for pre-filtering a global positioning system receiver, which includes the steps of: receiving a plurality of L-band radio frequency signals having unique modulation and originating in a plurality of global positioning system satellites; splitting the plurality of radio frequency signals into at least a first L1 radio frequency signal and a second L2 radio frequency signal; passing the first L1 radio frequency signal to a first radio frequency receiving section through a L1 signal passage defining a path from a common junction point to the L1 radio frequency receiving section, while simultaneously passing the L2 radio frequency signal to a second radio frequency receiving section through a L2 signal passage defining a path from the common junction point to the L2 radio frequency receiving section; filtering the L1 radio frequency signal from the L2 signal passage and filtering the L2 radio frequency signal from the L1 signal passage, while substantially preserving the L1 radio frequency and the L2 radio frequency signals; and feeding the L1 and the L2 radio frequency signals to the first L1 radio frequency receiving section and the second L2 radio frequency receiving section, for determining position information.

Method and apparatus for prefiltering a global positioning system

A Global Positioning System (GPS) commercial receiver is provided with a digital processor that can utilize to advantage P-code modulated L1 and L2 satellite signals which have been modulated with an unknown security code. Integration of the L1 and L2 signals, after demodulation by locally generated carrier and P-code signals, is repetitively accomplished over a duration that is estimated to be the period of the modulation code. The C/A-code L1 signal, which is not modulated with the unknown security code, is also used in locking the locally generated carrier and P-code generators in phase with the received L1 and L2 satellite signals. A interpolative technique is used for adjusting the phase of the locally generated carriers and code in increments much smaller than the period clock sources. Those locked phases can then be utilized to determine position, distance, time, etc., as is done in GPS receivers not utilizing the anti-spoofed signals but with increased accuracy and resolution. A novel structure of the GPS receiver radio frequency and intermediate frequency sections, having a specific combination of demodulating frequencies, is also disclosed.
