A multilevel power converter is provided. A first cell comprises a first switch and a second switch connectable to a load via a first terminal and connected in series on opposite poles of a DC source. A second cell comprises a third switch and a fourth switch connectable to the load via a second terminal and connected in series on opposite poles of a DC capacitor. An intermediate cell connects the first and second cells and comprises a fifth switch connected to positive poles of the source and the capacitor, a sixth switch connected to negative poles of the source and the capacitor, a seventh switch connected to the positive pole of the source and to the negative pole of the capacitor, and an eighth switch connected to the negative pole of the source and to the positive pole of the capacitor.

Multilevel power converter

The present disclosure provides a method and apparatus using a novel PWM switching technique that requires only one PWM carrier signal and benefits from two logic functions to provide switching signals and provides the flying capacitor (FC) voltage as well as dc-link capacitors voltages regulated to their desired values without external control. It may also, eliminate the odd multiples of the switching harmonic clusters from the output voltage is possible; double the frequency of first switching harmonic; reduce filtering efforts may be required since the values of the output LC filter inductor and capacitor can be very much reduced. Furthermore, notable reduction in control complexity is possible using the novel PWM method.

A power converter for transforming electrical power between direct current power and alternating current power is provided, as well as related methods and systems. The power converter comprises: a half-bridge inverter, a switching cell, and a connection branch connecting the half-bridge inverter to the switching cell. The half-bridge inverter comprises: first and second switches connected in parallel, and a first capacitor connected between the first and second switches. The switching cell comprises: a first pair of switches forming a first branch, a second pair of switches and a second capacitor forming a second branch; and a third capacitor connected between the first and second branches. The connection branch is coupled to the half-bridge inverter at a first point intermediate the first capacitor and the second switch, and coupled to the switching cell at a second point intermediate the first branch and the second capacitor.

Multilevel electric power converter

Generalized circuit topology of voltage level multiplier modules (VLMMs) for use with multilevel inverters (MLIs) and power converter circuits comprising at least one VLMM and a MLI are described herein. The VLMM is configured to receive a first output voltage from the MLI having a first number of voltage levels and to generate a second output voltage having a second number of voltage levels. If the first number of voltage levels is M, and the VLMM is N-fold voltage level multiplier, then second number of voltage levels is M&#xd7;N+1. Switching pattern generators for use with the VLMM and modulation methods for controlling switching elements of the VLMM are also described herein.

Voltage level multiplier module for multilevel power converters

A multilevel power converter and method for transforming DC power from a DC source into AC power for an AC load are provided. The converter is composed of a half-bridge inverter, a switching cell, and a controller configured for controlling operation of the half-bridge inverter and the switching cell. The half-bridge inverter and the switching cell are connectable to the DC source and the AC load. The switching cell is composed of first and second pairs of switches forming first and second branches in parallel, first and second capacitors connected in series in a capacitor branch connected between the first and second branches, and a pair of back-to-back connected switches in a third branch, the third branch connected to the capacitor branch and connectable to the AC load.

A controller for operating a multilevel electric power inverter circuit. The controller is configured to generate and apply to the plurality of switching elements switch signal waveforms, the switch signal waveforms comprising a first control signal for causing an energy storage device to be series connected with a direct current source and a load or an alternating current source and charged to a predetermined value proportional to a voltage of the direct current source, and a second control signal for causing the energy storage device to be disconnected from the direct current source and series connected with the load or the alternating current source, thereby causing the energy storage device to be discharged.

Method and system for operating a multilevel electric power inverter

There is described a multilevel electric power converter circuit comprising: Nswitching elements connected in series in a closed loop; Nadditional elements, the additional elements being one of a direct current source and at least one passive element, connected within the closed loop such that each additional element is connected to four of the switching elements, the ratio of a number of additional elements Nto a number of switching elements Ncorresponding to N=2N+2; and one of a load and an alternating current source connected across the closed loop at nodes between adjacent switching elements that are separate from nodes to which the additional elements are connected.

A method and electrical circuit for dynamic reconfiguration of a DC-to-AC inverter comprising first and second power rails where each the rails has a power source. The method comprises monitoring the first and second power rails for short-circuit failure; and upon failure of one of the power rails, disconnecting the failed power rail from its power source.
