A method and computer program are provided for handing off a mobile device in communication with a first wireless system having a first network address to one or more other wireless systems within communication range of the mobile device. The method and computer program include periodically monitoring by the mobile device of communications from the first wireless system and the other wireless systems, calculating a signal strength associated with each of the monitored communications, selecting one of the other wireless systems, and transferring communication to the selected wireless system upon detection of a predetermined threshold of the signal strength associated with the first wireless system.

Method and computer program for handoff of mobile devices between wireless systems

A system and computer program for evaluating in real-time streaming multimedia quality. The system including a multimedia server connected to a multimedia source and a remote client in communication with the multimedia server over a network. The multimedia server is configured to receive multimedia content from the multimedia source and to transmit the multimedia content as a multimedia stream. The multimedia stream includes a plurality of audio frames and a plurality of video frames. The remote client is configured to establish a multimedia session with the multimedia server, receive the multimedia stream via the multimedia session, monitor the media quality of the multimedia stream, and passively compute a subjective quality of the multimedia stream.

System and method for evaluating streaming multimedia quality

An asynchronous transfer mode infrastructure is integrated with the communications network. The asynchronous transfer mode infrastructure is composed of an asynchronous transfer mode fabric and asynchronous transfer mode gateway. Wireless and wireline data are linked to the communications network via the asynchronous transfer mode infrastructure, such that all wireless and wireline data transactions within the communications network are processed independently of any switching devices present within the communications network. Wireless and wireline data is transmitted to and from the communications network via a network access function that allows wireless and wireline data to flow to and from the communications network. The wireless and wireline data is converted within the network access function in response to transmittal of the wireless and wireline data to the network access function. The wireless and wireline data is then transferred to the asynchronous transfer mode infrastructure from the network access function.

Method and system for providing an integrated functional topology for wireless and wireline communication networks

A next generation wireless data system and method for handoff from a node in a network is presented. The system includes a core network (CN) and a source and a target radio network subsystem (RNS). The interface between the RNSs is enhanced to reduce unnecessary relay of messaging through the CN and thus will reduce traversing delays as well as the resources utilized in message processing. Two separate methods are proposed for handing off the data traffic to the target RNS at the CN packet processing node. These methods are a multi-cast function that concurrently sends data to the source RNS and the target RNS, and a suspend/resume function which suspends the data flow towards the source RNS and resumes the flow towards the target RNS.

Handoff mechanisms to support real-time delay-critical services in a next generation network

A method and apparatus for updating information in a personal mobility database server with information concerning a user's nomadicity. When the user travels from one place to another, the user registers with PMDNS server at an IP port for computing communications. PMDNS takes user's terminal personalization, together with usage profile, session characteristics into account to map a party's identifier to a terminal's identifier. The IP address of the user's current location is used in concert with the terminal's identifier, which is itself an IP address, to route incoming computing communications connection requests to the current location of the user. This information will be returned by the PMDNS directory server to the access network for the setup of the communications.

An improved method and system for limiting data packet transmission within a digital mobile telephone communication network, such as a code division multiple access (CDMA) mobile telephone communication network, by discarding unsuccessfully transmitted radio link protocol frames is disclosed. A code division multiple access (CDMA) mobile telephone communication network includes a mobile telephone, a base station, a mobile switching center, and a network Interworking Function. Within the CDMA mobile telephone communication network, each point-to-point protocol data packet is typically divided into multiple radio link protocol frames before their transmissions over an air link. In accordance with a method and system of the present invention, a marker bit is provided for each of the radio link protocol frames. The marker bit can be part of the frame header and will be removed before air link transmission. The marker bit of a first one of the radio link protocol frames is set to a first logical state (such as a logical &ldquo;1&rdquo;) and the rest of the radio link protocol frames are set to a second logical state (such as a logical &ldquo;0&rdquo;). In response to an unsuccessful transmission of one of the radio link protocol frames, all of the radio link protocol frames within the same point-to-point protocol data packet having the marker bit set to the second logical state are discarded, after a predetermined number of unsuccessful re-transmission attempts.

Method and system for limiting data packet transmission within a digital mobile telephone communication network by discarding unsuccessfully transmitted radio link protocol frames

A system and method for GPRS MAC procedures to support delay-sensitive, real-time traffic is presented. The system comprises a mobile station able to transmit packets to and receive packets from a base station, where the base station is coupled to a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network, and where the GPRS network is coupled to a data network. In an uplink dynamic scheme, the base station receives an empty packet from the mobile station. The base station releases a bandwidth allocated to the mobile station if an implementation dependent time expires and further allocates a reduced portion of the bandwidth to the mobile station if a number of the empty packets are received or if a control packet requesting additional bandwidth is received by the base station. In an uplink fixed scheme, the base station allocates a fixed number of radio resources to the mobile station. The base station releases the radio resources allocated to the mobile station, if the fixed number of radio resources are not utilized and further allocates a reduced bandwidth to the mobile station if a number of empty packets are received.

GPRS MAC procedures to support real-time services

A mobile communications system having a multi-level distributed frame selection and power control architecture includes a plurality of base station transceiver subsystems (BTSs) arranged in cells. Each base station transceiver subsystem (BTS) includes a capability for establishing a radio frequency interface with a subscriber unit in conjunction with a telephone call. A PSEL provides for implementing a power control and frame selection of compressed packet data in conjunction with the telephone call, the PSEL coupled to and being positioned proximate the plurality of base station transceiver subsystems. A router is coupled to the PSEL for routing compressed packet data to and from the PSEL. Lastly, a CSEL provides for implementing call processing and call management in conjunction with the telephone call, the CSEL coupled between the router and a prescribed mobile switching center (MSC) and further being positioned proximate the MSC, wherein the router is further for routing compressed packet data to and from the CSEL.

Multilevel distributed frame selection and power control CDMA architecture method and apparatus for telecommunication networks

A system for proactive maintenance of a telecommunications network. A database is created containing characteristics of a plurality of valid logs. These valid logs represent alarms within a network which report status and abnormalities in the network and which have been specifically selected by a network domain expert or administrator from a larger group of logs. The characteristics correspond to a pattern of network fault parameters. The network is monitored for occurrences of a valid log. When a valid log is encountered, future occurrence of a fault is predicted based on an analysis of the valid log and the characteristics found in the database. Corrective measures are taken to prevent the fault from occurring.

Network fault prediction and proactive maintenance system

A wireless communication system selectively delays serviced data communications to produce a desired level of voice communications capacity. The system first determines whether the wireless communication system has sufficient voice communications capacity. If it is determined that the wireless communication system has insufficient voice communications capacity, the system determines a data communications delay that is required to provide sufficient voice communications capacity. Based upon its determination, the system then selectively delays some or all of the data communications to create the sufficient voice communications capacity. In one operation, one data communication serviced by the wireless communication system is selectively delayed to create the sufficient voice communications capacity. In another operation, a plurality of data communications serviced by the wireless communication system are selectively delayed to create the sufficient voice communications capacity. When a plurality of data communications being serviced by the wireless communication system, some of the plurality of the data communications serviced by the wireless communication system are delayed by a first delay level and other of the data communications serviced are delayed by a second delay level.

Selectively delaying data communications in a wireless communication system to provide voice communications capacity

A communications system includes a dual mode mobile station and a home base station. Dual mode mobile station is operable selectively in CDMA and analog modes. Home base station includes circuitry for establishing wireless communications with mobile station in the analog mode, and circuitry for establishing communications with a wireline communications system, the base station allowing an exchange of information between mobile station and wireline system in the analog mode.

The provisioning process of the present invention first determines the average number of units of the system resource that are held per call. This parameter is a function of the call model and call-related event holding times. The average number of units is used, along with the Busy Hour Call Attempts to determine the holding rate, R,, of that particular call-related event to be allocated memory. A personal mobility system determines a terminal address corresponding to a called user based upon a personal identifier of the called user. The personal mobility system operates in conjunction with a plurality of heterogeneous networks to provide the terminal address corresponding to the called user, independent of the particular network within which the called user currently operates. The personal mobility system includes a personal mobility user application and a personal mobility server application. The personal mobility user application receives a request from a calling user, the request including the personal identifier of a called user. The personal mobility server application couples to the personal mobility user application and includes a plurality of user records. Each user record is respective to a user and is indexed by a respective personal identifier. Further, each user record includes a plurality of terminal records with each of the terminal records including a respective terminal address. The personal mobility server application accesses the user record for the called user based upon the personal identifier, selects a terminal record of the plurality of terminal records based upon the personal identifier, and returns a respective terminal address to the personal mobility user application. The user record may also include a network usage profile and a user profile for the user which are both employed in selecting the terminal identifier.
