Plastic housing and base construction, especially for compact fluorescent lamps and operating units thereof comprising a housing (1) which is a cup-like body and a base (2) having a metal base shell (26) and at least one metal central (3) or end contact part (4, 5). The base shell (26) is electrically insulated from the central (3) or end contact parts (4, 5). The base (2) also includes a plastic insert body (20) which is open at its upper end and closed at least partially at its lower end. The diameters of the plastic insert body (20) decrease in at least one step and it has a cylindrical or slightly conical mantle portion (24) in the region of its upper end. The base shell (26) includes a thread-free opening portion (27) the inner diameter of which fits to the mantle portion (24) of and is pulled over and fixed to the plastic insert body (20). The metal central contact part (3) or each end contact part (4, 5) is fixed to the lower end of the insert body (20) which has a rim (22) at its upper end for connecting to the housing (1). The housing in turn has a connection end (11) for receiving the insert body (20).

The ageing process of a low-pressure hot-cathode gas discharge light source, especially a fluorescent lamp is carried out by applying high alternating voltage being at least 8 times and at most 16 times higher than the burning voltage rating of the gas discharge light source after preheating electrodes thereof, whereby a short discharge arc is generated and then after changing the connecting arrangement of the input terminals of the electrodes the application of high alternating voltage is repeated. The equipment for carrying out the process of ageing comprises at least one supply unit for generating high alternating voltage being at least 8 and at most 16 times higher than the burning voltage rating of the gas discharge light source, at least one ignition system for breaking a circuit at maximal momentary value of a preheating current applied to electrodes of the light source and means for changing the connecting arrangement of output terminals of the electrodes to the supply unit and for altering output connection terminals of the supply unit with at least one current source.

Method of and equipment for ageing a low-pressure hot-cathode discharge

A process for flushing and filling a low pressure gas discharge lamp which has an exhaust tube and discharge electrodes at each of its ends and which is provided with a discharge vessel for limiting or bounding the gas discharge, wherein the course of the process the discharge vessel is coupled via the exhaust tubes to a pumping apparatus. Flushing or fill gas is continually charged into the discharge vessel via one of the exhaust tubes and simultaneously via the other exhaust tube the gas is discharged in such a manner that within the discharge vessel an equilibrium pressure prevails which coincides with the final charging pressure of the lamp, while the flow rate of the flowing gas is expediently maintained at a constant value.
