A mounting system configured to mount a personal electronic device (PED) in an aircraft flight deck is provided. The mounting adapter includes: an annunciator light including an LED strip for providing an annunciation regarding the PED; a display disable system mounted within the mounting adapter for disabling the PED display; and a controller configured to: obtain a captured frame of the PED display; send the captured frame to a server for determining whether a problem exists with an image displayed on the PED display; and responsive to receiving an annunciation indicator from the server indicating that the problem exists with the image displayed on the PED display, enable the display disable system to shut off the PED display and command the annunciator light to illuminate in a particular color that indicates that the PED display was shut off because the problem exists with the image displayed on the PED display.

Mounting device adapter and method in a system for displaying mission critical information on an uncertified display

An augmented display system with dynamic see-through transmittance control is disclosed. The augmented display system includes: an augmented display screen; a tandem electrochromic (EC) filter disposed over the augmented display screen. The tandem EC filter includes a first window having a dominant first transmittance characteristic and a second window having a dominant second transmittance characteristic; and an augmented display transmittance controller configured to individually control the activation of the first window and the second window of the tandem EC filter, wherein the augmented display transmittance controller is configured to: determine from an ambient light sensor output the transmittance required from the first window and the second window for a selected augmented display luminance; and apply appropriate drive voltage waveforms to the first window and the second window to achieve the determined transmittance.

Augmented reality systems with dynamic see-through transmittance control

An addressable display system configured for use in a mounting adapter configured to mount a personal electronic device (PED) on an aircraft includes a transparent surface configured to overlay the display surface of a PED when the PED is mounted in the mounting adapter wherein the transparent surface includes a region that is uniformly coated with a coating layer that when activated with a select excitation wavelength is configured to emit visible light to annunciate a message indicating a problem with an image displayed on a PED display; a lighting source configured to provide light in at an excitation wavelength; a MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) scanner module that is controllable to write desired symbology for annunciation at different addressable locations on the transparent surface; and an imaging device configured to capture an image of the PED display for an integrity check of data displayed on the PED display.

Addressable display system for ICA monitoring and annunciation for certified applications running on a personal electronic device

A method for verifying the integrity, continuity, and availability (ICA) of information displayed on an uncertified display is disclosed. The method includes creating application data for display on the uncertified display device that includes a subliminal symbol that is periodically embedded in a few out of multiple tens of frames and that is camouflaged in the application data using steganography; transmitting the application data to the uncertified display device for display; receiving images of the application data displayed on the display screen; determining whether the subliminal symbol is detected in the captured images by extracting the symbol from the captured images and comparing the extracted symbol to an expected symbol; determining that the application data is not corrupted when the extracted symbol matches the expected symbol; and identifying a loss of ICA when the subliminal symbol is not detected or does not match the expected symbol.

System and method for mission critical screen validation on commercial displays

A method in a high integrity device for verifying the integrity, continuity, and availability (ICA) of information displayed on an uncertified display is provided. The method comprises creating, on the high integrity device, application data for display on an uncertified display device; transmitting the application data to the uncertified display device; receiving, at the high integrity device from an optical sensing device, a captured image of the display; determining, at the high integrity device, an expected display image to be displayed on the uncertified display device; comparing, at the high integrity device, the captured image of the display to the expected display image; identifying, at the high integrity device, a loss of ICA if one or more frames in the captured image fails the comparison with the expected display image; and causing the annunciation of a message indicating the loss of ICA when a loss of ICA is identified.

Protocol for high integrity personal electronic device applications

A method for verifying the integrity, continuity, and availability (ICA) of information displayed on an uncertified display is provided. The method comprises creating, on the high integrity device, application data for display on an uncertified display device; transmitting the application data to the uncertified display device for display; receiving, at the high integrity device from the uncertified display device, a captured image of the display captured using a screen capture feature on the uncertified display device; determining, at the high integrity device, an expected display image; comparing, at the high integrity device, the captured image of the display to the expected display image; identifying, at the high integrity device, a loss of ICA if one or more frames in the captured image fails the comparison with the expected display image; and causing the annunciation of a message indicating the loss of ICA when a loss of ICA is identified.

A server system on an aircraft is provided. The server system is configured to allow critical aeronautical information to be displayed on a cockpit display that is not certified for displaying critical aeronautical information. The server system includes an aircraft interface device configured to interface with one or more aeronautical systems on the aircraft to retrieve critical aeronautical information; an application module configured to generate application data for display on the cockpit display wherein the application data includes at least some of the critical aeronautical information; an interface module configured to transmit the application data to the cockpit display for display; and an integrity checking module configured to retrieve image data from an image sensor trained on a display device in the cockpit display and configured to perform an integrity check on the image data from the image sensor.

A virtual window display includes: a plurality of collimated projector modules having contiguous exit pupils. Each collimated projector module includes: a display device configured to display a spatially modulated image along a flat or curved geometric image surface, and one or more optical lenses sharing a common curvature symmetry axis and configured to optically collimate light from the display device in the collimated projector module. The curvature symmetry axes of the plurality of collimated projector modules point in a plurality of angular directions and are substantially convergent along at least one axis at a finite distance from the plurality of collimated projectors. The total display FOV of the virtual window display is larger than the module FOV of each of the plurality of collimated projector modules.

A display integrity system for use in a mounting adapter configured to mount a personal electronic device (PED) on an aircraft is disclosed. The display integrity system includes a transparent surface configured to overlay the display surface of a PED when the PED is mounted in the mounting adapter. The transparent surface includes one or more regions embedded with one or more coating layers that when activated with a select excitation wavelength are configured to emit visible light to annunciate a message indicating a problem with an image displayed on the PED. The display integrity system further includes a lighting source housed in the mounting adapter and configured to provide light in the select excitation wavelength when activated to illuminate the transparent surface and an imaging device mounted in the mounting adapter and configured to capture an image of the PED display for transmission to a server for integrity checking.

Display integrity system for ICA monitoring and annunciation for certified aeronautical applications running on a commercial device

A system and method of displaying a conformal-capable head-up display image is provided. Distortions caused by combiner curvature, for example, are removed by pre-distorting and projecting separate images for each eye. Shutter-based eyewear controls the visibility as the imagery is cycled, e.g., shuttered, between left and right eyes. The combined image generator, projector and eyewear system maintains minimal vergence errors, minimal dipvergence errors, acceptable average transmittance, and optionally, high conformality.

High transmittance eyewear for head-up displays

A display system configured for displaying critical aeronautical information on an aircraft display that is not certified for displaying critical aeronautical information comprises a mounting adapter and an application server. The mounting adapter is configured to mount, in an aircraft cockpit, a personal electronic device (PED) wherein the PED is not certified to display critical aeronautical information. The mounting adapter further comprises a surface with an actuatable covering that is configured to be overlaid on a PED display and an actuation source configured to actuate the covering. The application server is configured to execute a module that generates critical aeronautical information, transmit the generated critical aeronautical information to the PED for display, determine whether a problem exists with the image displayed on the PED display, and enable the actuation source to cause the covering to annunciate a message indicating a problem with the image displayed on the PED display.

An improved AM OLED pixel circuit and method of wide dynamic range dimming for AM OLED displays are disclosed that maintain color balance throughout the dimming range, and also maintain the uniformity of the luminance and chromaticity of the display at low gray-levels as the display is dimmed to lower luminance values. As such, AM OLED displays can meet the stringent color/dimming specifications required for existing and future avionics, cockpit, and hand-held military device display applications. Essentially, the OLED pixel circuit and method of dimming that are disclosed use Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) of the OLED pixel current to achieve the desired display luminance. Two example circuits are disclosed that externally PW modulate the common cathode voltage or common power supply voltage to modulate the OLED current in order to achieve the desired display luminance. Three example circuits are disclosed that incorporate additional transistor switches in the pixel circuit to modulate the OLED current during the frame time. By PWM of the OLED current, in combination with data voltage (or current) modulation, wide dynamic range dimming can be achieved while maintaining the color balance and the luminance and chromaticity uniformity required over the surface of the display involved.
