A device detects infection associated with a prosthetically implanted device, such as a prosthetic knee. The device includes a sensor to detect the presence of one or more proteins secreted by body tissues in response to infection. The sensor may include a surface with a molecular imprint of the protein connected with a potentiometric or amperometric measuring device to detect when the protein bonds with the implanted surface. The device further includes an inductive coil coupled with a corresponding coil located outside the body. Electrical power for operating the measuring device and other circuitry is provided by inductive coupling between the coils. Signals indicating whether the protein is detected are communicated from the device to the external circuitry connected with the external coil.

In vivo sensor

Apparatus for producing a three dimensional nanofiber structure includes (1) at least two spaced electrodes; (2) a spinner adapted to rotate the at least two spaced electrodes; (3) a syringe assembly adapted to eject a polymer solution from a syringe of the syringe assembly towards the at least two spaced electrodes while the at least two spaced electrodes are rotated by the spinner; and (4) a power supply assembly for providing the two spaced electrodes at a first electric potential, and for providing the syringe at a second electric potential which is different from the first electric potential. A composition of matter may include (1) a least one layer of nanofibers in which a distribution of angles of fibers is 'aligned;' and (2) at least one gel layer, wherein the at least one layer of microfibers and the at least one gel layer alternate to form a laminate.

Methods of making three dimensional structures having aligned nanofibers and the resulting structures produced by such methods

Fabrication of a high sensitivity potentiometric biosensor is described. The present inventors have developed and characterized a novel amplification platform using a gold nanoparticle (GNPs) electrodeposition method. The synthesized GNP sizes were found to be dependent of HAuClconcentration, media acid, scan cycles and scan rate. A systematic investigation into the adsorption of different sizes of proteins from aqueous electrolyte solution onto the electrodeposited GNPs surface by the potentiometric method was performed. Results suggest that the size of different proteins affect how they bond to different sizes of GNPs. This GNPs-based biosensor can retain the native-like structure of proteins, and successfully detect proteins at a high sensitivity level. The resulting glucose and immune biosensors also exhibit low detection limit and wide linear range. This improvement to potentiometric devices enables them to serve as highly sensitive detectors for biomolecules and provides a model that can be used to predict protein bonding on nanoparticles.

Size dependence of nanoparticle-protein interaction and high sensitivity potentiometric sensor exploiting such interactions

Specific ionic interactions with a sensing material that is electrically coupled with the floating gate of a floating gate-based ion sensitive field effect transistor (FGISFET) may be used to sense a target material. For example, an FGISFET can use (e.g., previously demonstrated) ionic interaction-based sensing techniques with the floating gate of floating gate field effect transistors. The floating gate can serves as a probe and an interface to convert chemical and/or biological signals to electrical signals, which can be measured by monitoring the change in the device's threshold voltage, V.

Using floating gate field effect transistors for chemical and/or biological sensing

Sensors suitable for the sensing/detection of biological or chemical agents may be fabricated by immobilizing biological and/or chemical recognition components (selectors or probes) on a substrate by the polymerization of a suitable monomer in the presence of the selectors or probes, for example, by Polysiloxane Monolayer Immobilization (PMI). PMI may involve the polymerization of polysiloxane onto a substrate, onto which selector molecules are adsorbed or otherwise immobilized. The resulting immobilized selector molecule may then be used to interact with specific molecules (targets) within a mixture of molecules, thereby enabling those specific molecules to be detected and/or quantified.

Biosensor and method of making same

The invention concerns a method for controlling the adhesive bond between an electric-field responsive material and a substrate, which method comprises using an electric field to control the strength and integrity of the adhesive bond. The method may be used, for example, for removing or delaminating a material, which material is responsive to an electric field, from a substrate. The invention further comprises elimination of the application of the electric field and application of the previously removed electric-field-responsive material to the substrate, thereby resuming the strength and integrity of the adhesive bond. The invention includes apparatus for use in the bond controlling process.

Methods and apparatus for electrically modifying gel adhesion

An electrochemical method for producing a hole extraction layer in a solar cell based on organic semiconductor materials. Conjugated polymers are used to build a hole extraction layer and a photoactive layer. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) is used as a hole extraction layer and is deposited electrochemically from an aqueous solution on an indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode. A nanofibrilar or nanogranular morphology of the PEDOT is achieved by carrying out the polymerization in the presence of a surfactant. A photoactive layer of poly(3-hexylthiophene)/[6,6]-phenyl-C-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT/PCBM) can be deposited by spin-coating technique on top of the PEDOT layer.

Electrochemical method for depositing nanofibrilar poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) hole extraction layer in organic solar cells

A real-time method employing a portable peptide-containing potentiometric biosensor, can directly detect and/or quantify bacterial spores. Two peptides for specific recognition ofandSterne may be immobilized by a polysiloxane monolayer immobilization (PMI) technique. The sensors translate the biological recognition event into a potential change by detecting, for example,spores in a concentration range of 0.08-7.3&#xd7;10CFU/ml. The sensing method exhibited highly selective recognition properties towardsspores over other kinds of spores. The selectivity coefficients of the sensors for other kinds of spores are in the range of 0-1.0&#xd7;10. The biosensor method not only has the specificity to distinguishspores in a mixture ofand(.) Kurstaki spores, but also can discriminate between live and deadspores. Furthermore, the sensing method can distinguish aAfrom otherstrain. Assay time may be as low as about 5 minutes for a single test. Rapid identification ofSterne and&#x394;Ames was also provided.

Methods for detecting and/or quantifying a concentration of specific bacterial molecules using bacterial biosensors

An electrospinning apparatus for spinning polymer fibers from a fluid delivered by a jet supply device, which apparatus comprises at least one collector of a plurality of collectors in electrical communication with an electrode of the jet supply device. Collectors are insulated from each other. At least one collector comprises a stretcher adapted to stretch polymer fibers. The stretcher is an integral part of at least one collector. A controller controls sequence and time duration at which collectors are in electrical communication with the electrode of the jet supply device creating a non-woven polymer fabric or weaving polymer fibers into a fabric. The electrospinning apparatus comprises a rotator adapted to rotate the stretcher.

Controlled electrospinning of fibers

Methods for controlled electrospinning of polymer fibers are described. The methods include spinning a polymer fiber from a fluid comprising a polymer in the presence of an electric field established between a plurality of collectors and a jet supply device controlling the dispersion characteristics of the fluid by applying a magnetic field created by at least one magnet located after the point of jet formation. Different voltages are applied to at least two collectors of the plurality of collectors. At least one magnet, located between the jet supply device and at least one collector, creates a magnetic field substantially transverse or substantially collinear to an electrospinning jet stream. The magnetic field changes direction of travel of the electrospinning jet stream.

Methods and apparatus for modifying gel adhesion strength

The present invention includes a method for preparing polymer hydrogel spherical particles on a nanometer scale (nanogels). The method includes encapsulating hydrogel-forming components into liposomes, diluting the large unilamellar liposomes suspension to prevent polymerization outside the liposomes, and polymerizing the encapsulated hydrogel-forming components. The lipid bilayer may be solubilized with detergent. The phospholipid and detergent molecules and their micelles may then be removed by dialysis. The resulting nanogels may then be dried by evaporation in a temperature gradient. Poly(acrylamide), poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-1-vinylimidazole) hydrogel particles with a diameter from 30 to 300 nm were detected and characterized by dynamic light scattering technique. The solvent, temperature, pH, and ionic sensitivities of the nanogels were studied.

Floating gate field effect transistors for chemical and/or biological sensing

Lipobeads (liposome-encapsulated hydrogels) combine properties of hydrogels and liposomes to create systems that are sensitive to environmental conditions and respond to changes in those conditions in a fast time scale. Lipobeads may be produced by polymerizing anchored or unanchored hydrogels within liposomes or by mixing anchored or unanchored hydrogels with liposomes. Giant lipobeads may be produced by shrinking unanchored nanogels in lipobeads and fusing the resulting lipobead aggregates, long-term aging of anchored or unanchored lipobeads, or mixing anchored or unanchored aggregated nanogels with liposomes. Poly(acrylamide), poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-1-vinylimidazole) lipobeads were produced and characterized.

Lipobeads and their production

Ionic interactions are monitored to detect hybridization. The measurement may be done measuring the potential change in the solution with the ion sensitive electrode (which may be the conducting polymer (e.g., polyaniline) itself), without applying any external energy during the binding. The double helix formation during the complimentary hybridization makes this electrode act as an ion selective electrode&#x2014;the nucleotide hydrogen bonding is specific and thus monitoring the ionic phosphate group addition becomes selective. Polyaniline on the surface of nylon film forms a positively charged polymer film. Thiol linkage can be utilized for polyaniline modification and thiol-modified single strand oligonucleotide chains can be added to polyaniline. The sensitivity is because the double helix formation during the complimentary hybridization makes this electrode act as an ion selective electrode as the nucleotide hydrogen bonding is specific and thus monitoring the ionic phosphate group addition becomes selective.
