Coaxial electrospinning is used to encapsulate a chitin-lignin based hybrid gel with polycaprolactone (PCL). Antibiotics and/or other bioactive agents loaded into the core and/or shell layer of the fibrous platform are released in a controlled and sustained manner that effectively inhibits both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria without cytotoxicity to mammalian cells. The PCL shell layer provides longer life for the CL gels in a wet environment and allows sustainable drug release. The PCL-coated CL nanofiber scaffolds can be loaded with antimicrobial nanoparticles, antibiotics, oxygen-releasing agents, antioxidants and/or growth factors that promote healing when used as a controlled drug release dressing for chronic wounds, such as diabetic ulcers.

Cell blocker for multi-well cell culture plate

Inserts for the wells of tissue culture plates are provided. When placed in a tissue culture well, a bottom surface of a shaft portion of an insert contacts a bottom surface of the well and blocks the growth of cells in that area. The blocked area mimics a 'wound' in the layer of cells that grows around it. A cover portion of the insert comprises open channels through which cells, media, etc. can be delivered and gases exchanged while the insert is in place. Once the insert is removed, cell culture with the artificial 'wound' is used to test the efficacy of agents with respect to their ability to facilitate cell growth into and closure of the &#x201c;wound&#x201d;.

The extract may be formed into a dried powder and reconstituted into a variety of media for oral administration, intravenous administration, or other routes. The extract may also be administered to prevent the occurrence of cancer or to treat other ailments.
