A method for reducing the risk of particle (bacteria) contamination of parts of the body or body fluids by entraining particles in a fluid injected in the part of the body or body fluid by means of a fluid supplying instrument through a fluid inlet associated therewith is characterized in that after injection of the fluid through the fluid inlet, a fluid- and particle-absorbing, vapor-permeable body is inserted in the inlet so as to be exposed with the instrument, while an instrument, such as a cannula, catheter etc., for introducing fluid in parts of the body or body fluids is characterized in that such a fluid- and particle-(bacteria-) absorbing body is provided in the fluid inlet of the instrument.

A coupling member is disclosed for use in connecting together flexible tubes and the like. The coupling member is adapted for connection with a mating coupling member, and includes an outer rigid coupling component which is thermally resistant and an inner coupling component which is thin and flexible, so that the inner coupling component can provide a penetrable seal and whereby the overall coupling member is capable of withstanding autoclaving temperatures so that it can be sterilized prior to use. A coupling device including such a coupling member is also disclosed, including a second coupling member which is capable of mating with the first coupling member and which includes a penetrating portion so that when the two coupling members are mated, the penetrating portion of the second coupling member penetrates the inner coupling component of the first coupling member. The disclosed coupling device is primarily intended for use in connection with a treatment method known as CAPD (Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis).

After securing the conduit ends to the connecting piece, the support members are withdrawn through the sealable opening and that opening is then sealed. The support members can also act as electrodes for welding the conduit ends to the connecting piece, especially when the conduit ends and connecting piece are formed of thermoplastics. The method has particular, but not exclusive, application to smoothly connecting tubes for conveying blood.

An apparatus and method for the diffusion of substances between two fluids. The apparatus comprises at least one semipermeable membrane having first and second opposing surfaces, first conducting means for conducting a first fluid along the first surface of the membrane, and second conducting means for conducting a second fluid along a second surface of the membrane. The membrane is permeable to a portion of the first fluid so that at least a part of the portion of the first fluid is diffused through the membrane into the second fluid during conduction of the first and second fluids along the opposing surfaces of the membrane. Mixing means are provided for directly mixing the first fluid into the second fluid after conduction of the first fluid along the first surface of the membrane. In the preferred embodiment, this mixing means comprises apertures at the downstream end of the membrane for introducing the first fluid directly into the second fluid flowing on the opposite side of the membrane.

The groove has a first groove surface and a second surface disposed at an oblique angle relative to said first surface, the second surface including a clamping portion, and the clamping member including a locking portion adapted to mate with said clamping portion of the second surface of the groove when the clamping member is in the clamping position within the groove, whereby the beaded portion is held in its sealing position relative to the end of the flattened tube disposed within the groove.
