Coated nanofibers and methods for forming the same. A magnetic nanofiber is formed and a barrier coating is deposited on the magnetic nanofiber by atomic layer deposition ('ALD') process. The coated nanofiber may include a reduced magnetic nanostructure and a barrier coating comprising a first oxide coating on the nanofiber, the coating being non-reactive with the magnetic polymer nanofiber, the barrier coating have a thickness of 2 nm to 12 nm.

Creating and protecting magnetic nanomaterials

A data storage method, apparatus and system that increase drive capacity, minimize latency, reduce write access time and improve drive lifetime is described in this invention. In one embodiment, the data storage device described here is a composite hard disk drive comprises a number of recording media platters labeled from 1 to n, where n is greater than or equal to 2; wherein there exist two positive integer n1 and n2, where n1 and n2 are between 1 and n; n1 is not equals to n2; wherein the data tracks for the media platters n1 and n2 are written based on one of the following: 1) different RTs; 2) different WAs; or 3) different RTs and different WAs.

Composite hard disk drive

A sensor module includes a first contact, a second contact, and a sensing element made from an iono-conductive material having a conductivity that varies at least in response to variations in an environmental factor. Hard disk drive with composite permanent magnet

A capacitor includes a first electrode having a substrate and a plurality of nanostructures physically and electrically coupled to the substrate. The capacitor also includes a solid, non-conductive interlayer deposited over the nanostructures to coat the nanostructures, and extending between the nanostructures, and a second electrode deposited over the interlayer and extending between the nanostructures. The interlayer insulates the first and second electrode layers from one another.

A three dimensional magnetic recording media can consist of a coupling layer disposed between first and second vertically stacked recording layers. An apparatus that includes a read sensor having a bearing surface and first and second free layers that are separated by an intermediate structure. The first FL includes multiple segments, with each segment having a width at the bearing surface. A sum of the widths of different ones of the multiple segments is a first width of the first FL. The second FL is unsegmented and has a second width at the bearing surface that is different from the first width of the first FL. The read sensor also includes a first terminal connected to a first one of the multiple segments of the first FL, and a second terminal connected to a second one of the multiple segments of the first FL. A third terminal is connected to the second FL. Control circuitry applies a bias current from either the first or second terminal to the third terminal.

Read sensor capable of providing multiple effective read widths

A storage device includes a storage medium and a storage device controller that selectively varies a value of at least one write current parameter to generate alternating data tracks of variable written track width. According to one implementation, the alternating data tracks of variable written track width are generated with a single writer.

Write current parameter selection for magnetic recording

A storage device includes a transducer head with multiple write elements having write poles of different sizes. For example, the transducer head may include two write poles of different width configured to write to a same surface of a storage medium. A controller of the storage device is configured to selectively engage one of the multiple write elements to write data to the storage medium.

Dual writer head design

A storage device includes a controller that directs incoming data to a storage location based on a capacity of a region or surface of a magnetic disc. According to one implementation, the storage device controller writes new data to data tracks in a first series of data tracks on the magnetic disc until a capacity condition is satisfied. Once the capacity condition is satisfied, the storage device controller writes new data to a second series of data tracks on the storage medium that are interlaced with data tracks of the first series.
