Described herein are super absorbent materials (SAMs) and methods of making SAMs. The super absorbent materials are copolymerized with select redox active inorganic salts in a staged polymerization process. The copolymer-based super absorbent materials have significantly improved absorbance properties. The compositions and methods described herein are useful in a variety of absorbent products.

High-capacity superabsorbent materials and methods of making same

A method for increasing absorbent capacity of a superabsorbent material (SAM) by treating the SAM with a selected multifunctional chemical agent (MCA) or a combination of a plurality of selected MCAs is described herein. The selected MCA(s) may interact with the polymer chain of the SAM through one or a plurality of mechanisms that enhance the absorbent capacity of the SAM. In various preferred embodiments, SAMs include polyelectrolytes that are made from polymerizing mixtures of acrylic acid monomer and acrylic acid sodium salt, and L-arginine or lysine is selected as the MCA.

Superabsorbent material absorbent capacity increase with use of multifunctional chemical agents

Described herein are super absorbent materials (SAMs) and methods of making SAMs. The SAMs are copolymerized after formation of monomer complexes to incorporate select inorganic salts into the polymerized SAMS. The SAMs are copolymerized with select stable inorganic salts and/or with select redox active inorganic salts. The SAMS are copolymerized in a single-step polymerization process or in a staged polymerization process. The copolymer-based SAMs have significantly improved absorbance properties. The compositions and methods described herein are useful in a variety of absorbent products.

The present invention discloses a method for increasing absorbent capacity of a superabsorbent material (SAM) by treating the SAM with a selected salt or a combination of such salts. The selected salt(s) may interact with the polymer chain of the SAM through one or more absorbent capacity enhancement mechanisms. The absorbent capacity enhancement mechanism(s) between selected salt(s) and the SAM may lead to greater absorbent capacity of the SAM.

Superabsorbent material absorbent capacity increase with use of selected salts

Superabsorbent polymers are made of copolymers including a major portion of low molecular weight monomers each individually including a backbone and a charged moiety, a minor portion of high molecular weight monomers each individually including a backbone and a charged moiety, and optionally a crosslinker. The copolymer-based superabsorbent polymers have significantly improved absorbency under load.

Superabsorbent polymers based on copolymers of charged monomers and neutral monomers

A substrate has an elastomeric film having surfaces and a nonwoven web having fibers, wherein a plurality of fibers is partially embedded in one surface of the film. In addition, a substrate has an elastomeric film and a nonwoven web having fibers, wherein a plurality of fibers is partially embedded in one surface of the film, and wherein the substrate is essentially free of adhesives and film-based microfibers. A method for making a film/nonwoven composite includes providing an elastomeric film traveling in a machine direction; providing a nonwoven web traveling in the machine direction in face-to-face contact with the film, wherein the nonwoven web includes fibers; and impinging the elastomeric film with hydro jets such that at least some of the fibers become embedded in the film.

Hydroembedded film-based composites

A signal device includes a signal composite made with a coextruded film having at least two layers, a polymer skin layer and a stimulation layer. The stimulation layer includes a cooling agent and a polymer binder. The stimulation layer may be about 50 to 98 percent by weight of the signal composite. The signal device may be used in an absorbent article to provide a cooling sensation after a body-fluid insult has taken place.

A nonwoven material includes a backing substrate and a functional layer affixed to the backing substrate, the functional layer including thermal-setting fibers. The functional layer can be a nonwoven web including thermal-setting fibers, where the nonwoven web is affixed to the backing substrate. The functional layer can also include thermal-setting fibers and a thermal-setting polymer disposed on the backing substrate. The thermal-setting fibers can be melamine. Thermal-setting fibers can be rigidly fixed within the functional layer. The functional layer can further include a polymer resin.

Multi-purpose tough stain removal articles

The present disclosure is directed to a composite structure that is generally planar in shape. The composite structure has one or more layers; at least one of the layers includes one or more types of fibers. In one aspect, the present disclosure is directed to a composite structure including a hydrophobic support layer and a hydrophilic reservoir layer. The hydrophilic reservoir layer includes a composition that is liquid at temperatures below 30-35 degrees Celsius and that is a hydrogel at temperatures above 30-35 degrees Celsius. In order to better control the phase change of the composition and, therefore, to insulate the hydrophilic reservoir layer from warmth, the hydrophobic support layer may have a thermal conductivity that is 5 to 30 times less, in watts per meter kelvin, than water.

Structures containing thermo-sensitive gels

A cleaning article includes a cleaning article sheet comprising a fabric substrate, wherein the fabric substrate includes pores therein, and wherein the fabric substrate has a background moisture percentage by weight, and liquid water disposed substantially and disconnectedly within the pores, wherein the liquid water is at moisture percentage by weight that is 5 to 150 percentage points higher than the background moisture percentage. The nonwoven substrate can include pores formed between and/or within the fibers and can have a background moisture percentage by weight. The substrate can include a treatment to increase the dielectric constant from the dielectric constant of the substrate without the treatment. The moisture of the article can be configured to exhibit a dielectric constant of at least 50% and up to 600% higher than the dielectric constant of the same article with only background moisture.

Low-moisture cloud-making cleaning article

An article for transcutaneously applying electrical stimulation to sensory receptors. The article is a support to which an electrode pair, a positive and corresponding negative electrode, is attached. Leads are electrically attached to each of the positive and negative electrodes, wherein each lead has an insulated coating. A controller is electrically attached to the leads for delivering monophasic or biphasic electrical stimulation at a single frequency. A power supply is electrically connected to the controller, and may be attached to the support. The article may be a sock, a glove, a harness or an insole.

Method and apparatus to increase tactile senstivity and proprioception in humans

The present invention relates to a color-changing material and to a multiple-component material that includes a color-changing composition. The color-changing materials and color-changing compositions are capable of changing color in order to indicate a change in condition, such as a change in pH. The color-changing materials and color-changing compositions include a hydrogel-forming composition, a charged colorant and a pH adjuster. The hydrogel-forming composition includes at least one charged species.

Color-changing materials and multiple component materials having a color-changing composition

An absorbent article comprises a signal element having a body-facing surface, a garment-facing surface, a longitudinal direction, a transverse direction and a z-direction. The signal element includes a water-soluble polymeric buffering film and a stimulation material. The water-soluble polymeric buffering film comprises a water-soluble base polymer. In some aspects, the stimulation material comprises a temperature change agent, and the signal element exhibits a surface temperature change of at least +/&#x2212;2&#xb0; C. In some aspects, the signal element exhibits a stimulation effect over at least two aqueous insults.

Absorbent article having improved signal member

An absorbent article comprises a signal composite comprising a carrier substrate layer, a first stimulation layer, a second stimulation layer, a first thermoplastic adhesive layer and a second thermoplastic adhesive layer. The carrier substrate layer is disposed as a bottom layer of the signal composite. The first stimulation layer comprises a first stimulation material and is disposed above and adjacent to the carrier substrate layer. The second stimulation layer comprises a second stimulation material and is disposed above and adjacent to the first stimulation layer to provide the body-facing surface of the signal composite. The first thermoplastic adhesive layer is liquid permeable or water-soluble and is disposed between and adjacent to the carrier substrate layer and the first stimulation layer. Absorbent article having a signal composite

A lateral flow assay device includes a housing, and a test strip disposed within the housing having a membrane with a detection region and a collection region. A sample meter includes a first end for absorption of a test sample, and a storage section that receives and stores at least a component of the test sample. An opening in the housing is sized for insertion of the sample meter into the housing such that the storage section of the sample meter is disposed adjacent the collection region of the membrane. The test sample component is transferable from the storage section to the collection region for subsequent migration to the detection region. An activatable isolation mechanism is provided within the housing and is disposed so as to isolate portions of the sample meter storage section upon activation thereof such that a defined length of the storage section is presented to the collection region of the membrane.
