A resistor-assembly includes a substrate, a heater, a resistor-element, and conductive-leads. The substrate is formed of a ceramic-material. The heater heats the resistor-assembly. The resistor-element is formed of an ion-conducting material that overlies the substrate. The conductive-leads are formed of a catalytic-metal that are in communication with a gas and in electrical contact with the resistor-element. The resistor-element is characterized by a resistance-value influenced by an oxygen-presence in the gas when the resistor-element is heated by the heater such that a resistor-temperature is greater than a temperature-threshold.

Ionic-conducting resistor for exhaust constituent sensors

An exhaust sensor comprises a sensing electrode and a reference electrode each in contact with an electrolyte. At least one of the sensing electrode and the reference electrode are formed by depositing an electrode precursor material on an electrolyte precursor material and sintering the combination at a sufficient temperature for a sufficient time to achieve densification of the electrolyte, wherein the electrode precursor material comprises an alkali salt. Electrode patterns having enhanced perimeter ratios are also disclosed. The resulting exhaust sensor is capable of providing a usable output at a reduced operating temperature.

Low-temperature activity exhaust sensor

A gas sensor includes a sensing element formed on a ceramic substrate, an insulator surrounding at least a portion of the sensing element, and a metal shell surrounding at least a portion of the sensing element. The gas sensor further includes a cured ceramic adhesive structure bonded to the insulator and the sensing element, to the insulator and the metal shell, or to the sensing element and the metal shell. The ceramic adhesive structure is disposed so as to mitigate gas leakage through the gas sensor.

One embodiment of an ammonia gas sensor includes: a reference electrode, an ammonia selective sensing electrode and an electrolyte disposed therebetween. The sensing electrode comprises the reaction product of a main material selected from the group consisting of vanadium, tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium oxides, tungsten oxides, molybdenum oxides, and combinations comprising at least one of the foregoing main materials, and an electrically conducting material selected from the group consisting of electrically conductive metals, electrically conductive metal oxides, and combinations comprising at least one of the foregoing.

Ammonia gas sensors

A method for manufacturing a planar sensor, comprises disposing a film of a material on a substrate, wherein the material is selected from the group consisting of platinum, rhodium, palladium and mixtures and alloys comprising at least one of the foregoing materials; annealing the material; measuring a resistance value of the material; laser trimming the annealed material; heat treating the laser trimmed material; and laser trimming the heat treated material to form the sensor.

Temperature sensor and method of making the same

An electrical connection is made by connecting a metal element to a second element to which the electrical connection is desired to be made by means of a conductive material disposed onto one or both of the metal element and the second element so as to contact and disperse about or through the metal element thereby providing both an electrical and a mechanical connection. The metal element may be a strip or pad with openings or knurls formed such as by stamping, a wire that is flattened and knurled, or a mesh material such as a wire mesh. In a preferred embodiment, the conductive material is a metal capable of withstanding harsh, high temperature environments, such as a noble metal. In another preferred embodiment, the second element is a ceramic element, preferably with a noble metal conductive pad thereon, to which the metal element is attached.

High temperature electrical connection

A sensor may comprise a first electrode and a second electrode in mutual ionic communication with an electrolyte, a first socket disposed near a rear portion of a sensor element, a first lead disposed in electrical communication with the first electrode and in physical contact with the first socket and configured for electrical communication with a first terminal element, a second socket disposed near the rear portion of the sensor element, and a second lead disposed in electrical communication with the second electrode and in physical contact with the second socket and configured for electrical communication with a second terminal element. The first socket is disposed through at least one of an edge and an end of the sensor element, and the second socket is disposed through at least one of the edge and the end of the sensor element.

Ceramic device, sensor device, method of making the same, and method for sensing gas

A sensor comprises: a pump cell comprising an inner pump electrode, an outer pump electrode, a pump cell electrolyte layer interposed between the inner pump electrode and the outer pump electrode and a cell isolation layer disposed on the inner pump electrode on a side opposite the pump cell electrolyte, wherein the outer electrode is in fluid communication with a reducing gas. A reference cell is in operable communication with the pump cell, the reference cell comprising an outer reference electrode and an inner reference electrode, and a reference cell electrolyte interposed between the outer reference electrode and the inner reference electrode. A diffusion limiting material flanks both sides of a chamber formed between the cell isolation layer and a cell separation layer, wherein the cell separation layer comprises a via coaxial and in fluid communication with the inner pump electrode, the diffusing limiting material, and the outer reference electrode, and wherein the diffusion limiting material has a gas permeability such that the limiting current of oxygen in air is about 0.05 mA to about 5 mA per cmof pump electrode area.

Gas sensor and method for use thereof

A composition for forming an electrode for use in a torch jet spark plug is provided. The composition comprises a ceramic material, ceramic particles, and an electrically conductive material. The ceramic particles are dispersed within the ceramic material. At least some of the ceramic particles have a predetermined size. This predetermined size is at least as large as the thickness of the finally formed electrode. The electrically conductive material is capable of being manipulated to form ribbons around the ceramic particles and of being sintered to form the electrode. The resultant electrode has good resistance to explosive erosion mechanisms, which consequently increases the life of the torch jet spark plug.

Robust torch jet spark plug electrode

Disclosed herein is a ceramic part, gas sensor, and method for making the gas sensor. The ceramic part comprises: an insulating layer affixed to a substrate wherein the insulating layer comprising AlOparticles; and a glass comprising about 45 to about 69 mole percent SiO, 0 to about 9 mole percent BO, 0 to about 26 mole percent AlO, 0 and 25 mole percent SrO, and about 10 to about 26 mole percent REO, where REOis selected from the group consisting of YO, three valent rare earth oxides, and combinations comprising at least one of the foregoing. In one embodiment of a ceramic part, a gas sensor comprises: an electrolyte layer having disposed on opposite sides thereof a first electrode and a second electrode; and an insulating layer that is in intimate contact with the second electrode, wherein the insulating layer comprises alumina and frit. The method of making the gas sensor comprises: disposing a first electrode and a second electrode on opposite sides of an electrolyte layer; forming an insulating layer comprising alumina and frit; disposing the insulating layer adjacent to the second electrode to form a green sensor; and heating the green sensor to a temperature sufficient to sinter the electrolyte layer and the insulating layer.

Gas sensor having an insulating layer

A conductive co-fired body for an electrochemical cell for an exhaust sensor comprises zirconia, yttrium oxide, and alumina. The body comprises about 15 to about 30 weight % monoclinic phase zirconia. This produces an electrochemical cell having low impedance wherein the zirconia body and alumina body are co-fired. One method for manufacturing the electrochemical cell comprises combining zirconia, yttria, and alumina with solvent and dispersant to form a mixture. After, binder is added to the mixture which is then de-aired and cast onto a tape surface. The tape is dried, metallized, and laminated to an unfired alumina surface. The structure is then co-fired to form a body for said electrochemical cell.

Method of making a sensor and the product produced therefrom

One embodiment of a method of fabricating a sensor element for an exhaust gas sensing device, comprises disposing an electrolyte in ionic communication with a sensing electrode and a reference electrode to form the sensor element. The sensing electrode comprises an activator comprising silica and an oxide of an element. The element is selected from the group consisting of alkaline earth elements, rare earth elements, and combinations comprising at least one of the foregoing elements.

Method and device for hydrogen and hydrocarbon sensing

A hydrogen sensor and process for measuring hydrogen gas concentrations includes a pump cell and a measuring cell. The pump cell includes a first conducting electrolyte layer having a top and a bottom surface, and an electrode disposed on the top and bottom surfaces, wherein the top electrode is in communication with an unknown concentration of hydrogen gas. The measuring cell includes a second conducting electrolyte layer having a top and a bottom surface, and an electrode disposed on the top and bottom surfaces, wherein the bottom electrode is in communication with a reference gas source. A diffusion-limiting barrier is disposed between the pump cell bottom electrode and the measuring cell top electrode, wherein hydrogen diffusion through the diffusion-limiting barrier is controlled by a Knudsen diffusion mechanism at hydrogen concentrations greater than about 40%.

Hydrogen sensing process

The torch jet spark plug comprises a shell with an insulator body concentrically disposed within at least a portion of the shell. A pre-chamber is concentrically disposed within at least a portion of the shell and at least a portion of the insulator body, the pre-chamber having an orifice disposed at a first end of the pre-chamber and at an insulator body first end. On at least a portion of a pre-chamber internal surface is an inner electrode comprising up to about 75 vol. % of a bonding agent, about 20 vol. % or greater of a catalytically active material, and about 5 vol. % or greater of a transition metal material. At least partially disposed within a second end of the insulator body, opposite the insulator body first end is an upper terminal. Finally, an upper electrode is disposed within the insulator body, between the inner electrode and the upper terminal, and in a spaced relation to the inner electrode.
